climbing the mast

Post by csmurray1 »

Can the mast hold someone's body weight to climb up the mast to rig a line or fix something? Never read anything in manual.
Thanks

Why wpould you want to do that when you can so easily demast the boat?

It can. The problem is unless you are awfully light, well under 150#, your weight at mast top will bring the boat over onto its side.

Yup, try standing on the deck , hold the mast and lean out as far as you can.

Me thinks it will lay the boat on its side.

Our keel boat mast was only a little higher, and it had a 12 foot beam and lots of lead in the 4 foot deep fin and I went up half way one time, after that I sent my son up to the top, think metronome, ticking away side to side while you swing and sway, and we had the jib and main halyards running through some pretty substantial blocks to lift us, are you sure you want to trust your weight to those blocks? Like the others suggest, just lower the mast, it is easier to work on it especially when you need a tool or drop one.

Yeah, When I was a teen we used to jumo off the spreaders of a 35' keelboat and from just 2/3 the way up we could really rock the boat.

It would swing out far enough as to put you completely over open water.

csmuaary1.
When you attempt it, would you mind getting your old sheila to take a video.
I can promise you all us blokes down here would love to see it...probably be a scramble to enter it in Funniest Home Videos show too.
Just joking mate....
Personally I would lower the mast.
Cheers

mast

The ADMIRAL was putting on the genoa sock and let the halyard go, zip right up to the top of the mast.
I got lucky with a couple of expantion poles, and a hanger taped to it, took about 15 minutes, I couldnt have lowered and raised the mast/genoa in that time.

My genoa cover rope broke and I am to lazy to pull the mast down, I have it in a slip. Thought I would send my skinny 14 year old up there to feed it through. Looks like I will have to pull her down.

Bill - I would think 15 minutes is about right to lower and raise the mast again? Of course fishing with two boat hooks taped together always looks dignified
