26M and X Speed Test

Post by daydreamerbob »

Hey Guys - here are my stats - what are yours?

2008 26M Yamaha 60 High Thrust (Prop not sure), less that 10 hrs runtime

WOT Full Tank 1 Person - 16.8 mph land speed

WOT Empty Tank 2 Persons - 16.8 mph Land Speed

What's up with that?

How are you measuring your speed?
What RPM's are you seeing?
Any wind, wave or current differences between speed runs?
Are you sure your ballast was full, and conversely, are you sure your ballast was empty?
Lots of variables to consider, but your results do seem strange as reported.

Not that strange depending on weight of crew.

If its a 100# Admiral, 12 gallons of gas weighs 72 pounds and 30 pounds weight wont give a measureable speed difference.

26 M Suzuki 70 and about 10 Hrs runtime as well: Only tested speed briefly, I get 16 mph with 3 persons onboard and full water ballast, 21 without. Tide was no factor, about 10knots of crosswind (from the side) and going in both directions on Gordons river (inner state canal). I am sure I can achieve maybe 1 -2 mph more, but I just wanted to see max Rpm, and as soon as I saw 5400 I went back to normal speed. 5400 told me the prop is properly sized - 13x13.75. I addition my suzuki is installed on wedges from WM, Ithink they are well worth the money.

With my x and a50 Mcury Bigfoot, 16 MPH was the max I ever saw.

Did you mean empty gas tank or empty ballast tank?

I only have a 40HP Merc (with a powerthruster) and I can get 16.8 with ballast empty and two people.

But I can only get about 14.5 with ballast and 2 people.

Reading over back posts when I was breaking in my Merc 50 BF last year, I got the impression that I could expect over 12 but less than 16 under most conditions. Lake conditions, chop, wind and traffic, never let me fully test this but it is my impression that it is a reasonable assumption.

Sushwap Lake, BC, Canada
Very calm lake
3 Souls on board (My son, his 95 lb girlfriend, myself)
Loaded for cruising (food, clothes boxes of wine, etc)
No Ballast
96 Tohatsu 50 TDLI, with 12.1 x 9 prop
Top speed (sustained) 15.1 KNOTS, 17.4 mph, 27.8 kmph (go metric go)
This was with son and girlfriend straddling the bow. When they were back with me speed dropped to 14.7 knots.

Best speed ever was when Adimral and I were onboard during the same summer and same lake, still outfitted for cruising. She was sleeping in the Vberth and I had to find some internet source fast (client in need) Somehow got up on plane and sustained 17 knots but have been unable to reproduce this again. Smooth bottom (the boats, not mine) with no bottom paint.

best speed ibe managed so far, with two adults on board,16.9 knots no ballast, this was with c130king on the bow, speed dropped to 15.5 knots when both were in cockpit.

I did play around with the angle of the engine and managed to squeeze a little more out of her by doing that

forgot to add,Yamaha 50 big foot, prop unknown but the revs get to 5100
