Total weight of a Trailer+Mac26X+Honda 50HP?

Post by J.Teixeira »

Hi

For trailering in Europe there is maximum weight of 3500 Kg Car+Trailer+Boat+Motor.

What is the total weight of a Trailer+Mac26X+Honda 50HP?

Thank You

Jose

Are you sure about that rule? It certainly doesn't apply in all countries.

26X with engine on trailer is around 1800kg, possibly more if you have lots of gear/fuel/water on board. To tow that safely you should rekon on a tow car with unladen weight >2000kg. My car is about 2200kg, so in total I'm around 4000kg, and in the UK that is definitely not illegal, and as AFAIK is legal on continental Europe too.

Some of the caravan combos I've seen on European roads would also be over 3500kg. There may be a limit of 3500kg for the fully-laden trailer, excluding the tow vehicle.

In the UK there are also different rules if the tow vehicle itself is over 3500kg.

there are some slight differences in towing law between the UK and mainland europe, but if you look at your cars vin plate,it will tell you its maximum towing weight.

I tow my mac with a longwheel base mitsubishi shogun/pajero,my towing vehicle is rated at 3.5 tons,it tows a mac :macx: with a yamaha 4 stoke 50hp engine on the back.

you will have no problems getting under the 3.5 ton limit with a fully loaded mac 26x

Ah yes! Sorry, I forgot the driving licence question - I've had my licence long enough I'm not affected :)

You probably can keep the train weight within 3500 kg, but it will be close. A bare 26X with mast, boom, sails, but no motor and no extra gear on board is almost exactly 1000 kg. The weight of the trailer depends on who made it - in Europe I think it's unlikely to be the US trailer. I have a UK-made double-axle which I think weighs around 600 kg. Don't know details of the Honda, but my Suzuki 55 is about 120 kg, which is fairly heavy for that size engine. So with a tow car weighing less than 1800 kg it would be just within the total.

But that means the car is barely any heavier than the trailer, which does not make for a very stable combination. If you add the extra stuff you'll want to carry, like fuel, various gear - ropes, anchor, fenders, etc. - it all adds up. It would probably be better to load as much of that as possible in the car to improve the weight distribution.

Alternatively take the test to get the B+E category on your licence, then you don't need to worry. 8)

I weigh each boat on the crane lift. They vary from 1300kgs to 1400kgs (that one had everything.)
Then I have to put every trailer over the weighbridge.
They range from a neat 300kg to a 340kg with a spare tire.

My boat on the trailer is 1680kg and my European style trailer alone is 390kg.

The 50hp are always a little lighter.
The fuel and water tanks are always empty, so is porta potti.
There is no personal gear.
I normally take the chilli-bin (ice chest to you, esky to Aussies) out, as I put the electronics etc (items of high value) in it and lock them in my shed.
