Colour code for blue MAc 26M

Post by Mistral »

My first post on this site.

I imported a 2nd hand MAC from the USA to OZ. There are some marks on the blue hull and need fixing with fiberglass. Trying to colour match the fiberglass so the repairs won't be visible.

Does anybody know the colour coding of the blue for a proper match up?

The faster white boats are easier to match :)

Greetings Mistral,

My last reply may not have gone thru.

Blue Water Yachts in Seattle WA [Fax: (206) 281- 8704; Phone: (206) 282-4261, or (800) 688-8626] have fiberglass touch-up paint for the 26M in blue & beige. They're also on the web, but the discussion board won't let me include their link on this message.

Good luck.

COLOUR CODING...

Post by puggsy »

:macm: I just got my :macm: back from the glass shop. They found it very difficult to colour match...the job was not 100%. You can see where they repaired the gouges...Maybe ROGER should supply PHILLIP with the details to keep his OZ customers happy. Our local glass people cannot match it. Pugs :macm:

Actually since the direction of the water's rotation is reversed in the southern hemisphere, a blue boat might appear to have a speed advantage. The visible colors from shortest to longest wavelength are: violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. Ultraviolet radiation has a shorter wavelength than the visible violet light. Infrared radiation has a longer wavelength than visible red light. The white light is a mixture of the colors of the visible spectrum. The visible blue light has a wavelength of about 475 nm. Because the blue wavelengths are shorter in the visible spectrum, they are scattered more efficiently by the molecules in the atmosphere. This causes the sky to appear blue and blue :macm: to appear faster especially going in the wrong direction.

8) ok enough, I will post the link to Blue Water if you want to order their touch up paint

you can try your local car body shop, call them first and ask them if they have a "spectrum anilyzer",its a gadget that you hold to the colour and it gives you a match, the down side would be having to use car paint, dont know how this shapes up against boat paint, then again if they are using a PPG system, they might be able to mix up boat paint.

Last summer, I put a few dings :( on the bow of BOLD VENTURE that need to be repaired (I have a terrible time docking :x ). I called Bill (Parts Dept) at MaGregor Yachts and ordered a pint of the blue gel coat for $20.60. It should be arriving any day now. I had to send him a bank check before they would ship the blue gel coat. I hope this helps you. Oh yes, you will have to purchase the hardner/catalyst from an auto repair shop or West Marine or an eqivalent. Shipping the go juice is an issue and very expensive, if not impossible.

Fair winds,
Jim

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I would think I'd have a problem importing a small can from the USA to OZ, that is why I asked for the coding.

I think I will need to scrape some off and take it to paintshop that has a spectrum analyser , who can than hopefully get the correct mix for me.

It would be great if you post the eventual solution to the colour matching problem. I also have a blue 26M - so far havent had to patch the blue part but I guess it is only a matter of time. I had enough trouble trying to match the white for a chip in my M's bow,. :( I didnt get it quite right, but its small and in an inconspicuous place so I'm hoping a bit of fade will help. Good luck

Mistral,

You shouldn't have a problem with shipping from the US. The touch-up paint from BWY is about the size of a votive candle & sealed in molded plastic packaging.

This stuff is designed for application onto fiberglass & bonds well. You won't have to worry about it flaking off &, or not matching. It may be a better bet than trying to match paints that may not bond with fiberglass resin.

very good point, when I used some auto touch up paint on my :macm: the stuff flaked off when scraped with a finger nail. I just wanted to cover up a small spot, I had to use the gel coat repair stuff Bill gave me.

I have been unable to get the colour coding for the very fast blue Mac. Phil King has not answered my e-mails, since I gave him the VIN no and he found out I imported it direct. (I will now get all spares from the USA)

We tried to do a colour match and the very fast blue hull seems to be a shade darker than Royal Blue. With a bit of mixing we should be able to get it right.

...Maybe ROGER should supply PHILLIP with the details to keep his OZ customers happy
Part of the problem is that the factory (Roger) don't want boats imported other than through Sharpe Marine (his daughter) which is his perogative.
This is why all warranty is void and parts are not to be supplied, any US dealer found to be helping won't be a dealer especially with new boats.
Personally I don't see the problem with bringing in S/H but they do protect the turf fairly well but Phil can't get any more until December anyway as they are in short supply in the US apparently.
As for new boats being imported we bought ours in cheaper through them than what we could bring in a S/H 5 yr old today when the dollar was 71c US and still have warranty etc.

Mistral, jump on the phone and buy the blister pack from the States.
The colours are right, the instructions are good, it is not a big nor heavy package to post.
It is exactly what hardflat described.

Cheers
Phillip
