I think you're close but from the pictures it looks like the new galley arrangement will allow it to slide further aft so it is completely over the aft berth giving you a full length seat on the port side.

I also think your center position is about as far forward as it goes.

Duane,
The bottom view (galley aft) is right off their website unmodified. At least half the galley does not go over the aft berth, where it floats above the mattress. It sits above the aft seat.

I assumed the galley would go forward to where the seat back splits, and that the center position would be about halfway between, or just enough get the galley off the aft mattress.

My interpretation of that drawing, with the arrows pointing both forward and back is that that is drawn in the middle position. The side view is marked the same. From the few pictures I've seen it looks like the track extends aft enough to get the galley completely behind the cushion.

The more I look at the new plan the more I like it. I don't think I'd miss the view out the front much. We keep our curtains there closed almost all the time on our X because the windows in the stripe there suck in to much heat. I could live with the dagger board. The cramped head is a bummer with it's even worse headroom but we would survive as long as we could cut out the shelf and put in the 6 gallon toilet.

One kid could have the vee berth, two in the back with far better access. We'd use the dinette although I'd want to be able to extend the berth out to port more so it is wider, at least as wide as the forward seat, maybe more. Top the space with an air bed and we'd be comfortable.

My wife could actually use this galley unlike the previous M's and it would be nice to be able to get it out of the way when not in use. It might be hard to live with the interior storage of the galley being only a 1/4 of what we have now in our X.

At least there is now a real place for a cooler, think a 50qt 5 day will fit? Still don't like the fabric walls or the double windows.

I believe Duane is right on this one. The galley has three positions: all the way aft, part way extended--ie just enough to cook on, and fully extended. BWY is working on a way to place a small cushion on the settee when it is in the middle position as there is a gap in the cushions when in the middle position.

Tom, now that you mention there's a gap there, it all falls into place. I read the text that said the picture with half the galley in front of the berth was the "aft position." I read over the following sentence that said the galley could slide back 12" further, I guess into what is the aftmost aft position, LOL! So the picture I thought was the aft position is really the center position.

[on edit] No... that picture shouldn't be the center position if there's a gap in the center position... I'm confused.

I like my 2004

Post by Andy26M »

So far, I am not sold on the 2005 layout. The moving galley seems cool, but also feels kind of gimmicky.

As to the dinette, I think the seats are too narrow.

I just spent 10 days on my 2004 M in the Adirondacks. 2 of the days were cold and blustery, so 4 adults retreated inside my boat to get out of the wind and rain and play cards. We sat for several hours on the roomy settees and found it very comfortable. Afterwards, I removed my table and had my brother and his wife (both about 5'9" and average weight) lean back on the front of my galley counter to see how "wide" it really was - clearly they would have been elbowing each other and would have been far less comfortable if they wanted to sit on a bench that narrow for several hours.

As to other times, I usually sail solo so I rarely ever set up the table at all.

What is nice is that now there are 3 interior choices, meaning more folks can find what is "just right" for them.

I'll second that. The 05 seats with the table look pretty wide..but now that you mention it...it may be tight.

The only thing is the 05 the seats are said to be a bit higher. I wonder how much. It might be worth raising the seats on our 04. Gain a lil more storage (to the large amount that is already there)

I am thinking about making backs for the interior back cushions so you can sit with your back to the rear berth (like the 05). Looks pretty simple to make.

The open floorplan and flat floor of the 03/4 is the best IMO. Then again, neither 03/4 or 05 is a new design. They have been used before, just a bit larger now. I am sure my opinion is somewhat based on the fact I am used to the layout and some of the perks and drawbacks. The 05 looks pretty neat. But wonder how well it will work once you get your gear onboard. Also, with our experience, wonder how well the galley is built and how well it would work.

Although I prefer the '04 layout, I have to say the galley in the '05 is very well made. (for a Mac) It slid easily and was easy to fasten tight for sailing or motoring. The choice between them should come down to which interior works best for you. If possible spend some time in both to see which one feels the best for the way you will use the boat.

Regarding the width of the seats; they come to the 1/2 way width of the boat whereas the X seats were a tiny bit wider as they were over the centerboard trunk. The base height of the seats is about the same height as the battery box on the '04. It was when I was sitting in these seats (I am 6'1", 200lbs.) and learning I could not install a Wallas stove, I decided on the '04 model. If only the 05 were available I would not reject the boat because of it as we had very few problems with the similar layout on our X.

That may be true of the forward dinette seat in the '05, but the aft one is much narrower because of the ladder. Looks like a three seat dinette to me, and the forward seat is a lot harder to squeeze into than the X's because of the daggerboard trunk blocking the end.

Moe,
You are right. It was the forward seat I auditioned. A squint at MacGregors home site shows the aft seat much smaller.
