Accepted my offer on 26X
Made an offer on a 1999 26X has a lot of aftermarket goodies inside and a galvanized tandom axle trailer. Will be picking it up next weekend. Wont sail it right away have to rebuild the Honda Carberators which are flooding like mad and need to make the paint look better. So along with my other projects around the house I have to finish for my wife, I should be sailing in about 3 weeks after pick up.

I sympathize about the carbs... replace everything that moves while you're in there. Floats, jets, needles. They aren't hard to rebuild, just a bugger to get off the engine. Since Honda didn't sell a "rebuild kit" I had to point at parts on a mechanical drawing and order each o-ring and part separately. Nuts!
Oh yeah, get intake carb-to-manifold gaskets too, and there's an extra one -under- the intake manifold. If you remove the carbs as an assembly you break the water jacket, that's the one I'm talking about. Once inside there is a zinc too... plus a zinc under the access panel on top where you replace the thermostat.

ROAD, (as in Retired on Active Duty??? ...
)
I was sailing out of Norfolk NAS for about 8 weeks this past Summer. It is a really excellent place to sail in my opinion.
I kept my boat in the water at the Norfolk NAS marina. Had a 2-year old bottom paint but it didn't seem to do any good. Pretty good build up of barnacles (or something...not quite sure) after only about 8 weeks in the water.
(* Photobucket is working again. Here is the picture. *)

If you plan to leave your boat in the water make sure you have a good bottom paint.
Seems like there are lots of marinas in that area. I only went out on the Chesapeake proper a few times...only when I had a sailing partner that had some limited experience. I mostly single-handed and stayed in the James River but that is still a nice place to sail and a good place for a relative newbie like to me to expand my sailing skills.
Would love to go back in a few years and do more exploring. Hoping that my next duty station is Norfolk or Langley. Would like to explore the York River, and up to Tangier Island and even beyond.
Best of luck with your new
.
Jim

I see someone knows what ROAD Meens. I pick that name because after 19 years of being stationed at GO GO units in the front lines and being in charge of 42 people minium at a time, this place is preaty kick back and I am only responsible for about 9 instructors at any given time but it is highly political. As far as anti-fouling paint goes I am going to replace what is on there for looks only because it is faded and chipped. The boat has a nice bairer coat though and I am 20min or less within 2 public Boat ramps for this boat and 4 for my sailing Kayak. So I really dont need the anti-fouling paint but will replace just for looks.

Sounds like you have a good plan. What school are you at?
I have almost 21 years in. But I am locked up until at least 2012...possibly longer if I get promoted.
I got the picture to work (see 2 posts up). I normally keep my boat on the trailer but for the 8 weeks I was at Norfolk I kept the boat in the water and it was worth every penny for it allowed me to sail everyday after class and to launch/recover from my slip single-handed if I couldn't get anyone from my seminar to go out with me.
My paint job is around 2 years old and is from the PO. I don't plan to repaint anytime soon since I don't normally leave my
in the water.
Best of luck on your upcoming retirement. Thanks for your service to our country.

Hey C130,
The last time I saw a boat beard like that it was that the Owner did it himself and may not have mixed the ablative enough. Probably left the toxic bits in the bottom of the can
We both then heard that you need to stir that bottom up like crazy. 1/2 hr or so stirring with a heavy duty mixer like a large drillbit mixer.
Can anyone confirm

I know the PO did it himself because he also got paint on the trailer when he did it. He kept the boat in fresh water but when I bought it it had a light layer of algae or something. But that came off with power washer pretty easy.
This growth that I got was more of a pain. I did not have access to a power washer in VA. I scrapped as much as I could with a plastic putty knife and trailered it back to Florida. Of course I was hoping nobody would notice the "ugliness" on the drive from VA
Back in Florida I power washed it again. Now it looks fine.
ROAD, I was at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk. I wanted to sail up the James River to Fort Eustis, to check out the "Ghost Fleet" stored in the River...but I never got around to making that trip. Maybe next time.
You ever fly the SOF helo's and refuel from the USAF HC-130s at Moody AFB, GA? I refueled the SOF helo's many times.
