Winter Sailing in Monterey Bay

Post by delevi »

Just got back from a Christmas sailing trip in Monterey Bay. Before you cold-winter folks get too envious, I want to say that this wasn't one of my finer sailing trips. It got really cold at night, like around 30 degrees. No heat on board. We froze our a**es off! Came back two days early. Took some pics and video for request of showing the Pentex genoa and flattened mainsail.

Up there

Post by pokerrick1 »

I really want to get my boat up there to Monterey and also to Moro Bay next summer - - - two of my fav spots. I'll stop at Santa Barbara on the way up.

However, I will be at a dock and in a slip at night (not anchoring), and therefore will have electricity and HEAT (if nec) and all the other boat comforts (ie. TV, Microwave, refrigerator). I am NOT a good camper - - - my idea of camping is the Holiday Inn instead of the Hilton! :)

Rick,

I agree. I intend to use shore power whenever its available. But, I bought an Origo 2000 Gl one-burner stove, just in case.

We actually stayed at Marinas but I don't have shore power. Burrr! Any good easy mods for shore power and heat? I'm not good with electrical stuff. Thx.

Gotcha - - - but I don't think this is hard, Sir, and this is the easiest solution I know of - - - if someone has an easier one - - - PLEASE tell me. I understand you don't have built in shore power, but most marinas also have a receptacle for an extension cord - - - soooo - - - for that reason - - -I also carry a commercial heavy duty LONG extension cord AND a power strip, so I can plug in my refrigerator, coffee maker, and heaters, and extra lighting I have aboard. If the slip I am at does not have any electricity, I move and search around until I find one that does (I'll explain it in the morning if I have to). Again, I don't camp well :(

I agree Rick . Back in the day I did ALL THAT MACHO STUFF! Walked 3/4 of the Pacific Crest Trail , Hunted from horse back slept under the stars in a bed roll, white water rafted , free climbed, snow camped and X country skied in the wilderness for days and weeks, Rode the Harley from L.A. To Kennewick non-stop. Now its MUCH more civilized . That said.......
The simple cord will do. Worse case scenario. Have two cords .
# 1 a typical cord . . . .2 straight blades and a ground from Home Depot. #2 a twist lock Marine approved cord with an adapter made . Take any plug strip cut off the cheap plug end and install a male twist lock and you'll be covered in all situations. It'll work. It wont look nice but it will suffice.

Nice pics and vids Leon, thanks for sharing.

I use a 75 foot 30 A generator cord. I just cut the generator adapter end off, bought a marina shore power type, attached it to the cut off end, and the other end has 3 standard 3 prong plugins on it, so I just run that into the cabin via the right side of the companionway hatch. I plug in my dual batt charger and if staying at the slip overnight, plug in my West Marine boat heater. That thing works great and will heat up the Mac in no time.

Welcome Home

Leon, Dawn and Jake,
It was fantastic meeting you in Monterey. It was indeed very chilly! I wish we could have lent you our extention cord and heater. It would have made your stay in Monterey much nicer.
Next time you are coming this way I hope we can connect for another class of wine!

Best, Carl and Colleen ( and kiddos)

Hey Carl & Colleen,

Great you made it to the sight. Welcome aboard. It was great meeting you both. Dawn & I sail Monterey Bay several times a year, so I'll give you a shout next time we head down there. Send me a PM with your email address. Perhaps next time, we will sail there out of SF Bay rather than trailer; would be 3 days each way, stopping at Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, then Monterey. If you guys make your way to the Bay Area, perhpas we can hook up for a sail on SF Bay. May even trail your boat here? February would be a good time to practice, before the winds get really extreme in March-September.

Guys, thanks for the ideas about shore power and heat. Going high on the list of mods (which means soon.)

Happy Holidays,
Leon
