Mac 26 M Rudders

Hi Guy's

Question on the mac19 its rudders are designed to be used for sailing & also stayed pinned down for full eng. powering

I have a friend who's considering mounting a set of Mac 26 M rudders to his Mac19.

Can anyone tell me if the Mac 26 M manual tells you that you can power full throttle with them down or does it say to raise them up for powering at full throttle

As I might consider the same Mod but not shure these rudders are as strong as the mac19 rudders which are much thicker body wise at the mounting bracket all the way down the center length

As I heard stories here of rudders breaking on the M on fallowing sea's

I'm still pondering on the Idasailor rudders I have heard bill at boats for sail has a set on his Mac19 but I have not seen any postings on what kind of improvement if any and are they worth spending the money on do they really make the difference that Idasailor claims ?

All coments are wecome, Ray be nice now  :P

Cheers John

Hi John

Pretty sure it says all foils up for anything above 7mph.

It does. All boards up when powering about 6 MPH.

I have the IDA sailor rudders and they seem to be an improvement in heavy air and possibly very light air. They appear to be quite strong and I can't imagine the rudder itself breaking. Looking at the stock rudders I can see where they might break.

Breaking might be an issue. But, I bet the boat would get REAL squirrley with the rudders down at high speeds...

If you can motor at 15 knots with M19 rudders down, they can't be adding any lift, can they? Are they just vertical boards, or foils??

You should phone IDA and ask about the differences, M19 versus M26.

I don't think it's an issue of breaking rudders, but rather the loads the engine will generate on the steering system with the lift of the foils. Roger probably knows what he's talking about when he says to raise all foils when powering above 6 mph. Partly, this may be the risk of breaking a foil if hitting an underwater object. I have motored as fast as 8-9 mph with foils down but certainly don't make a practice of it. Bottom line, if you intend to run the engine fast, pull everything up.

I wondered who was going to have a come back on that one had you & Ray on an even bet guess you won Eh.
Well I broke down & bought a set of Idasailor rudders this morning I want to do a conversion to my own rudders but that would mean no rudders in the mean time to sail with :( & this allows me the time to mod my original rudders & will also give me a spare set :)
This will also mean that my boat will be even faster " a little kick A_s" :D :D :D how you guy's gonna keep up :P
