That's one lucky sailor. Might give MadMike a run for the money. Any Macsailors up for an ocean crossing?

2 stroke motor just above idle

Gerry Speiss used a 2 stroke outboard running just above idle, ran it for 6 days continuously, he complained that the noise was terrible. He caculated his range at nearly 1000 nm using 54 gallons of premixed gasoline. Something like 17+ nmpg. If he could tripple his fuel economy, he could power all the way across the Atlantic.
..
Today, he might have used the Yamaha F4 which has the world record fuel economy of 67 mpg.

Honorary Darwin award for the effort, in my book
He carried 54 gallons of pre-mixed gas on board, most of it in the bilges, down low for ballast.

For many, the question as to whether you're considered a fool or a hero often boils down to whether you make it home alive or not.
Others realize that fools often survive.
Hero or fool, those that don't survive don't normally write books about it.

I ran into Gerry at White Bear lake before he crossed the atlantic. He was arranging water jugs in his boat, I use to sail the lake first with my Flying Junior and later on with a 16 ft Luger day sailor. He said he was planning on crossing the atlantic in that boat. I remember I remarked to my friends I dont think I would attempt to cross this lake in that thing, however the next year he did it. Amazing.

Couldnt help but post that he wasnt wearing a PFD of course.
I guess this is consistent with anyone who sails around with 54 gallons of gas in the bilge in cans
To be honest, I do share the 'admiration of sorts' with these sorts of endeavours but this board is full of people who espouse sound seamanship...if you are new to sailing this guy is NOT a role model of any kind.

Promotional photo for his book. The small craft does not appear loaded down with 1500lbs of stores.
Apparent he did not tilt up his engine? The Voyage would only have taken 40 days if he had!

Also the boat was a light/dark green color combo when I seen it in MN, If he would of painted it McBlue color could he of made it in 14 days?
