Finally discovered Mack's speed sweet spot over and back to Catalina last week. It's 16.5 knots (19.8 mph)-- no ballast. At this speed everything clicks-- true plane, great gas economy (3700 rpm with my 90horse), safe, "comfortable" ride in most any condition save wind chop. Faster speeds are nice but a bit nerve racking (less reaction time). I will experiment with full ballast next time and post my conclusions.

19.8 mph! That's WOT and 6200 rpm for my 50hp Johnson.
3700 rpm sounds good for cruising.
Problem is I promised my wife that this Johnson would "last forever".

Wife problem huh.....Hmmm, so she wouldn't let you out of your promise even if you convinced her that your Johnson isn't big enough? And for that matter, that you used to think it was big enough in days gone by?

Once you have got a Black Johnson, you never return to port.....
