More stupid boat tricks

Post by Matt M »

I promise I'm not trying to become a member of the SBT club, but I may have done it any way. I had the boat on the trailer last evening in the drive and lowerd the motor to check the oil filter type in preperation to change oil and filter. My method of placing the motor support on the vehicle seat as a reminder that the motor was down was once forgotten, and yes, I backed the boat into the street to reposition for the oil change job.

Bottom line is I bent the skeg, curving to about 10 or 15 degrees with no cracks visible. It might have been worse but the truck tires are wide and were in the grass.

Any advise on correcting the bend on my own. There are not any prop repair shops with in 140 miles.

Matt,

Hearty Welcome to the Club. Here's your sign.

My latest was leaving the engine tilted down when pulling up the launch ramp. Crunch crunch crunch! No damage though. Back into the truck. Hey, then to add injury to insult, some bystander informed me that one of my rudders was dragging! A little grindage there though. Hey, it was a long tiresome day on the water.

Good Luck

Thanks Theo.

Well, after alot of observation, a straight edge, chalk and a rubber malot hitting on the skeg (I lost count) muliple times, I got it within 1/4" of original. There were no visible cracks and although the metal is probably weakend, it is not noticable. Now to put her back in the water to check the performance.

Ladder ...

Post by Andy26M »

I found out last weekend that if you leave your ladder down on a 26M, and then start motoring, and the water flow lifts the ladder up just right, and you make a sharp right turn, you can stike the ladder with the blades of the prop ...

Luckily I was going very slow and all I did was chip the paint off of the blade tips - no noticeable bends or dings the ladder has a little bit of play in it, luckily it is not super rigid. Not even a scratch on the stainless steel ladder...

I have this ladder:

You know what? If you leave it down, while motoring, you just can't turn left... Luckily, we didn't get a prop strike...

Cool Ladder

That is a great looking ladder, much better than mine, where did you get it and how much. I scuba dive of my X and have been looking for this style of ladder.

That picture was shamlessly stolen from the mods section. Its not my boat. I have a white :macm: , but with that same exact ladder, mounted in the exact same place.

I had my engine dealer install it. I think it was around $200. But, I've since seen them at the local Boater's World for less.

You can actually use it to board the boat while on the trailer.

We haven't yet, but the ability to board with 'some' scuba gear was the reason we got this one. I can say it is real easy to get on and off the boat with it...

The one downside, is that the mount is the only thing fixed to the boat. The ladder itself is slid down into the mount and lifted out... This, of course means that you have to store and deal with that big ladder every time you need to use it.

A side issue is that it is simply not going to help you reboard if you fall off singlehanded, since it will be stored someplace...
