Batteries...Location??

Hiya all.
In Britain, if you use a boat on rivers, you have to have a Boat Safety Certificate. Quite strict - the batteries on my '96 Mac are located in the space under the ice chest. Great idea - helps with stability. But, because its not really vented or sealed, it'll fail the cert - I'm pretty sure of that.
So:
Where's the best place to relocate the batteries? (hope I don't have to, 'cos there's alot of wiring to re-route (solar panels etc)
Or:
Vent the area with a hose running thru the heads up to the deck, or to the rear bulkhead?
Anybody got any ideas? Would be interested to know where people locate theirs.
Many thanks in advance!!
Regards
Max
