I have a stern rail from a mac 25 but it doesn't quite fit. It will need to be narrowed and I'll likely need to move the legs around a bit. I imagine I could sleeve and bolt (or rivet) pieces together but I also have a mig welder and I could get the right gas to actually weld it. Any thoughts on doing this?
I found the original drawings of the stern rail for the classics so I guess I can figure it out but if anyone has any tips or suggestions, I would love to hear it.
Welding thin wall stainless is tricky. If you know how to do it, I’d imagine it’s the way to go. But if you’ve never done it before, allocate some time/material to practice.
Too much heat and you blow through the thin wall. Putting a sleeve on the inside will help with this. Too little heat and you have to go slow causing the alloying metals to separate out of the steel. This will give you a usable weld, but it will have lost most of its corrosion resistance.
Maybe MIG is easier though. I’ve only tried it with TIG, and I have limited TIG experience in general.
