I had to share this CL posting, it's a joy to read. I'm not sure if this guy knows how to put the mast put, but apparently put a 140 on it. Not sure if you guys have seen that before.

Looks like the aft wouldnt take much to drag on that unbalanced trailer.

You know, assuming everything works, $12,500 for an X with a 140 HP isn't bad. Way more than I would put on one.

I wonder if this guy is related to that Arizona guy who attached a JATO rocket to the roof of his Chevy...

I mean seriously, a Mac under power is unstable at the best of times. Why not triple the power? What could go wrong?

Hey Dave, I disagree with the "unstable at the best of times" evaluation. I think that the X and the M are extremely stable, when operated correctly.

There is one known condition where the X is unstable: ballast empty, board down, and full power. There is a suspected condition where the X is unstable, where the ballast is partially full under sail in waves, where in theory the momentum of the water in a partially filled ballast tank, as the boat rocks back and forth, contributes to the overturning force.

Other than that, for a coastal trailer-powersailor, the boats are extremely stable. I can attest to that under full sail in conditions that force round-ups, under conditions that continuously throw waves over the front windows, under high-speed maneuvers with a 90HP, including hole-shots with the wheel hard over, ballast empty or full, through wakes that slam the hull. There is zero hint of instability in any condition except board down/full power/ballast out. I've played wake-jump with jetskis at full throttle/full turn figure 8's, slamming through the wakes, I've overloaded the boat with 7 people and their gear, I've overpowered the boat with a 90-Horse at 30MPH...It's remarkably stable.

Now, the boat is "tippy" to a point, but that's not "unstable". The tippiness is a feature of a water-ballasted boat.

True for the M, too. Any dagger down above hull speed makes the boat feel very odd - doesn't even have to be full power.

I run a 2 stroke, mix your own gas 120hp evinrude V4.
The boat and motor are a great match.
Only issue = when in the up position, it likes to flop over so I do not let go of the wheel unless I disconnect the steering.
Point being, a slightly bigger 140hp would not bother the boat a bit.
We have a bunch of transom back there.

A part of me is tempted, but I need another X like a hole in the head.

On a totally different note, if I suddenly owned the X in the add, the very first thing I'd do is paint the raccoon stripe back on. I absolutely hate the look of that boat in comparison with the original. Looks like a West Wight Potter.

I'm thinking of repainting my stripe in high gloss black. Someone here used a home Depot product and gave it good reviews. Anyone remember who that was or what product they used?

Looks like a decent deal - but yer gonna need a new trailer. I’d offer $10K Cash - Really $9,5K. There’s no sailing gear pictured. I didn’t even see the brackets for the rudder.

Mind you, I’m the Hugest fan of going Commando… but where’s the rest of the X

Lastly, my pilots fine just using motor. I do keep my Starboard rudder available and connectable. But between spinning a bigger prop, 15.5” and knowing my boat, I’ve hardly used it this mastless Season.

Huh. I guess YMMV.

At anything over 7 knots under power, my X gives oncoming vessels white hair because it wanders by 10 degrees no matter what configuration and no matter how diligent I am at the wheel. OK, I guess that's not "turtling"-level unstable but Jeez.
