Lifting outboard

Post by kenfyoozed »

How do you lift or raise your outboard once you are sailing? I have a 26D. 9.9 Outboard will be on a bracket. Do you just manhandle it up? Or are there other options? I

The key to inner peace is to admit you have a problem and leave it at that.

I have an bracket made by panther. I haven’t installed it yet. The old bracket I took off was still a bit of work to raise the outboard. Thought about adding an arch and attach a hoist to help raise and lower.

I also have a Panther brand engine mount. Maybe you have a slightly different version? Two major things to consider. One is that the metal edges on the mount are RAZOR SHARP especially with wet skin. They didn't seem to bevel out half of the metal hardware it's constructed from. The other issue is the small metal travel lock on the inside of the mount rattles like crazy when underway. A cleverly placed rubber band or large o-ring fixes that.

As far as usage is concerned, couldn't be easier! To raise the mount while sailing, Grab the foam handle, pull towards the cockpit first to unlock it, then pull up to the height you want. The huge springs in the mount take up 80% of the load. My engine also tilts so after I raise the mount, I tilt it way back and it stays clear of the water completely.

Thanks for the info! My old bracket took up almost no-one of the weight. Glad to know the panther is better.....

Here’s a suggestion for dealing with those sharp edges you mentioned LakeMac26C….

Works better than a file and is available at Lowes ( similar item can be found at Home Depot or Menards)

I have a 9.9 on my 26s. I step in the motor well, and raise the bracket. Then reach to the back of the motor head, and tilt it up to get the prop all the way out of the water. The weight isn't bad, but if you picture this in your mind you will note that 25% of my mass is aft of the transom. Probably not the best situation.

Well, as long as someone has the video camera on, it sounds like it has great entertainment potential. Reminds me of reaching down with my foot, while planing, to close the ballast valve after dumping. If I miss, I’ll disappear over the stern with the kill lanyard, leaving the crew to wonder why we stopped; and where I went.

That's a great story and one I can relate to. I ALWAYS train guests and crew about man overboard. But I always worry they don't get it and if I went over they would be watching me as the boat sails away totally forgetting their "training".
