My '98 26X came with a barrel bolt on the head door. Don't know if it was OEM or the PO installed it. Either way, it has been a knuckle busting PITA over the years. With some outside temperatures it easily fit into the catch; other times of the year or even points of sail, it took a hammer to get the knob to move to the open position. Well, today I took it off and installed a rubber stretch clasp I found at WM. My Admiral is ecstatic. Here is the old latch:
Now the new one in the locked position:
And the unlocked position:
Clever latch...good job. My '98 was having issues with the original barrel bolt in which it was fiddly to try and latch/lock it. Investigation revealed the hinges were worn and sloppy. FYI if yours are worn and the door is sagging the hinge is Sea-Dog P/N 201954-1 easily sourced at
your local marine store....or here.
The lock is on the outside. A mischievous Herschel could lock the admiral in. That could present a challenge to his counseling skills
Ironically, I have pondered how a person could get out if accidentally trapped inside the 26X head. The barrel latches would be awfully hard to defeat from the inside, but this rubber one I think would be less of a problem. It has enough give to it that I think a person could get a finger out and release it. If armed with something sharp even cut it. Since my wife and I are septuagenarians, I don't expect we'll find ourselves in that fix, but you guys out there with younger children could foreseeably encounter an "accidentally" locked in younger sibling! but hopefully NOT!
Perhaps you are right, but just wanted folks to know that the "field test" went well. Don't want to post a mod that doesn't work as advertised. Latch held nicely during transit to the marina on an expressway trip of 25 miles and during a WOT run around the lake. And, of course, it was easy to open when needed.
