Came back from a cruise and found this:
Sail tack has lost its hardware and come unattached.

Now I forget how to reattach it. It should have a small D-shackle attaching it to the drum on the starboard side, just like the line on the port side, yes?



While I'm at it, this is just not right. The shackle's ring-ding has pressure on it, and the ring-ding is the only thing stopping the mast from coming down!
Suggestions? Pics of your setup?

Don't just use a ring-ding.

Don't just use a ring-ding on the furler, suggest you use a genuine (tiny) shackle. And if the ring-ding on the bow attachment concerns you, use a larger one made of stainless or a thicker stainless cotter pin.

Sorry. Let's deal with my two issues separately.

1. The Headsail tack. I just need a small shackle.


2. The forestay/deckplate connection.

I'll use a larger ringding, but that won't solve the problem. There should be no pressure on the ring ding. The pin should not be angled like that.
I need to add spacers** or reduce the gap.

**which I really don't want to do because attaching the forestay at mast-raising time is by far the most labour-intensive thing I have on this boat - even though it's only once a year.

Doesn't this give you even more slop in your forestay under tension?

For the OP, on the forestay to deck connection. The ring ding should not have any pressure on it. The ring ding only prevents lateral movement so the pin does not slide out. I would just use some pliers on the furler connection and close the gap of the 'U' since it looks like it has spread out.

BWY has a longer pin with a larger grip on it that will also help.

The point of the photo is the placement of heavy duty ring dings. The one and a half inch twisted shackle was just to create space for an anchor to rest underneath.

Maybe, but I think I did that once already, and I suspect the pull on the forestay will just straighten it out again.

Yes, I intend to get that.

OK, I went to replace the headsail tack shackle and found all my replacement shackles have pins that are too fat. So back to the chandlery for an even smaller one.

I found the port D-shackle (left in rsvpasap's pic) was popped and barely hanging on:

The forestay is SS cable, not braided line.

Yeah. OK. So I wasn't 1/32nd of an inch from being dismasted. OK.
