Rudder brackets

It seems like every other trip to the bahamas I'm reading about ends with a rudder bracket broken so naturally it got me looking at my own....i have a 99x and I believe has the SS bracket to the best of my knowledge.....ive never even seen any other Macs besides my own to compare to so I looked online doing searches ... sometimes polished aluminum looks like ss but from pics I'm fairly sure there is a significant difference and fairly sure I have ss brackets
Question is what can be done to try to avoid this common problem I'm seeing ..... I bought a shark drogue from fiorente with knowing it could help me steer if I broke my rudders but ideally I want to make sure they don't break

Rest assured: when you have a '99 :macx: you have the SS rudder brackets. The alu brackets are black. Both types are not readily interchangeable, because the steering linkage and the rudders themselves are also different.

Ty yeah I definately have the ss ones I didn't realize the aluminum ones were black...... have there been any reports of people breaking the ss ones? I'm wondering if I should buy a spare

I have the old aluminum ones. Regardless. I'm a huge fan of having a spare. 8)

Old style (cast aluminium brackets with Easter Island moai-like rudders):

New style (formed and welded sheet SS brackets with longer rudders*):

First photo from Herschel's post in the Steering Limits thread. Second photo is of my boat.

*I don't know if the rudders are late-model OEM, or aftermarket from IDA Rudder though. They appear to be solid HDPE, not FRP ('fiberglass' with gel coat).

I've never heard of that type breaking, and believe me I've tried (with those looong rudders), but me not knowing of such a problem isn't the same as them never having a problem of course. :D

tomfoolery dubbed my rudders
Easter Island moai-like rudders
That is neat. Never seen that connection, but you are right. What an apt description. Perhaps I will watch the New Zealand rugby team a little closer and try my hand at their pregame chants. Ugga-ugga! :D

Old style (cast aluminium brackets with Easter Island moai-like rudders):

FYI - This is a pic of the early (95) X brackets, they bent easily. The later aluminum brackets are thicker and the side gussets extend forward past the cutaway for the rudder.

(Actually they are made of flat aluminum plate)

At first glance, I though you said "moai". :D

A striking resemblance, don't you think.
