Ok freaks.

So, the mast on my is pinched right at the spreaders - classic failure waiting to happen. I probably have the rig too tight coming from mast-head sloop and well, the mast on my the p26 I owned weighed 105 lbs. Anywho...

I have read the threads and wish I could find an old Hobie 18 Mast and perhaps an old boat actually to install rotating mast hardware? I want all the sail I can get so will not go below 28 feet on the mast and would be willing to go up to 31 (if the weight was correct).

I'm also of the idea that the single spreader system is not enough. I've seen too much flex in this mast for my comfort.

So, here 's what I want/need/dream about.

1. A Hobie 18 mast (probably easiest / cheapest)
2. Fix my mast (I've read the threads about cut it / make plug or sleeve system / 2 piece) This is an option I guess.
3. Carbon (did Mike ever make Carbon masts?)
4. Install an Mast on the

The problem with 1, 3, and 4 is needing the material in SE USA (Gulf Shores to be exact).

If I see Travis coming down the water way again, or Chinook makes another loop... Piracy may be involved.

Does anyone have one they want to sell? Anyone recommend an option?

I would be willing to get nuts and do the carbon / synthetic rigging thing maybe too. Although most standard carbon masts out there at this height are too heavy I think to gain advantages?

I have played around with a bent 26m mast. I cut it at the bend and made a sleeve using a section of a 26x mast. I could not find anyone who could supply a sleeve that would fit. It is very difficult to make a internal sleeve.
If your mast is still straight, only crimped at the spreaders, do not cut it. I would make an external sleeve, much easier to do and you will preserve the sail guide track. You could fabricate it from AL sheet or slit a piece of Al. tube and reform that to the shape of your mast. A sleeve about 18" long would be OK. Use many pop rivets to attach it to the mast.
If you search the web for mast sleeves you will find many examples and how to do it. Remember all the tall mast rigs use sleeves they can't make the long ones in one piece.
If you convert to a 26M mast you will have to replace your main sail and move your shrouds chain plates back about 8" and lose the back stay. You will also have to replace your rigging.
Mike Inman told me you could leave the 26x chain plates in place and just keep the back stay loose so the mast can rotate. You would still have to replace the rigging as the mast is longer.
A new mast, main sail, rigging, chain plates/ reinforcement etc is quite expensive. I would give the external sleeve a try and see how it goes.

I know that a complete new rig would be an expensive route. But the BWY 26x Tall Rig Mod looks juicy

For this season, I think I should take your route probably. My sails are pretty much new as well as rigging.

No, but it's intriguing. The X has a small sail plan for its size, which is why the M has a larger one, and adding a few feet and a larger main is an interesting idea, though it may be a little too much for the hull shape and ballast scheme.

Not that I'd do it, but it's interesting.

Matt priced out a carbon fiber mast for his , search user maStrebe posts for discussion. I think his boat went on clis-xd and grew to 38 feet for over four hours before he bought it, though.

Forget straight carbon. Too easily damaged. And damage could be hard to spot. Don't forget fiberglass when it comes to making sleeves. Esp inside sleeves. Make a plug out of foam and once the sleeve is cured, remove the foam. Make the plug 28 inches long and bond one end in to the lower mast section with epoxy. Have the upper mast section fit snug.
Remove upper mast section when trailing.

I finally found that mast sleeve in my storage place , so if u E/M me a full size print out of ur mast size "a drawing of the outside dia. " & wall thickness & I,ll check to see if it will fit but I,m pretty sure it will b the correct size altho shipping might b expensive !

Do you have a picture of your mast "pinched" at the spreaders. I am curious of how bad yours is to have you concern. Mine has a bend that I have been trying to work out of it. A buddy of mine and I placed it in between a tree and a telephone pole and worked on bending it straight. It seems to doing fine now, but still seems to have a slight bend toward the aft more than I would like.

I was thinking about getting a carbon mast for my mainly for the weight savings. So I can put up my mast by myself when I get older and frailer.

So how much would a simple carbon mast be?
