Spreader Bracket too heavy!

Ok I've spent the last few weeks talking about the in's and out's of Mast's and after a lot of fuss I'm getting a 4.5" spar which is very similar the 4.5" Mac Mast on the later model boats.
The old 5" mast used to make the boat roll in a cross wind (even without a sail) so I'm hoping the new one will be much better. It's all going to take another two or three weeks which gives me time to prepare the mast fixing and make up the new removable spreader tubes.

But one thing that concerns me is the weight of the Spreader Tube Bracket .... It's thick, fat and tough and weighs in at 1pd on it's own! ....And considering the low strength of the spreader tubes I don't see the point of having a Spreader Bracket that this heavy that high up on the mast .... Am I missing something? :|

All the best.

Yep the load on the spread tubes is a compression load where as the load on the bracket is a combination of compression and shear. Grab an old dunny roll push on the ends fairly strong now push on the sides fairly week. This is why the bracket is stainless it needs to be strong to withstand the different types of loads.

Hey guys,

This is the “Power Sailors” thread, not the Australian section. When you start using terms like “Dunny Roll”, you need to translate for the rest of us. I had to Google it because I dunny know what you are talking about. One ply, or two :?: :D

Good explanation kadet .... good-on-ya mate :D

Sorry guys there's just no telling an Aussie :| .... so if you can't beat em, may as well join em 8) .... Dunny Roll sounds so much better than "The Heads Roll" anyway :D

All the best.

LOL Neo, I read this and didnt even consider the slang at the time, I guess we Aussies are just immune to the language thingy. I always know what the septics are banging on about but they just dont get us. Oh well. :?

OK Kadet,

Thanks for the Aussie slang dictionary. I will have to print it out, and keep it available from now on. :)

After Dunny Roll, I did however need to look up one more item. “Septic”. Really :!: :o Are we that bad :?: :D :D

Since you guys changed the subject to Australia maybe you folks could help me with somthing:

I'm impressed with the SARCA EX-CEL spade anchor and with it's detachable spade it makes a great bow anchor that will fit in the rather shallow chain locker in 'boat'. Problem is I can only find this thing in Australia. Anyone Stateside using this anchor and know where to get them?

TANKS! :) (i don't speak Australian :| Sorry!)

I BRAKE FOR WOMBATS!

I don't think it will fit the anchor locker, even dismantled.

You should probably start a separate thread on this, in part so others can access it on a search. That, and anchor threads are like religious threads; very strong opinions, and high emotions. :D

Hi Ray, this thread has been hijacked so is now not a secure place to be discussing "Spreaders" of any shape or form :?

Kadet provided a good explanation and made be see the light! :) ..... I'll be designing my own Dunny Roll Spreader Bracket soon :D
