Great Lakes Water Levels

Post by dlandersson »

Trying to think about the spring/summer season 8)

Great Lakes Water Levels

Lakes Superior and Michigan-Huron are both 2 inches lower than they were a month ago, while Lakes St. Clair and Erie are at their levels of a month ago. Lake Ontario is 8 inches higher than it was a month ago.

All of the lakes are above their levels of a year ago, with Lakes Superior and Michigan-Huron 2 and 1 inches, respectively, higher than what they were a year ago. Lakes St. Clair, Erie and Ontario are 18, 7, and 8 inches, respectively above last year’s levels.

Lake Superior is predicted to decline 2 inches over the next 30 days, whereas Lake Michigan-Huron will be near its current level. Lakes St. Clair, Erie, and Ontario are predicted to climb 1 to 2 inches over the next month.

Lake Mead, Nevada is down 100 feet! and falling. Lowest it has been since filled in 1942. Pray for snow in the western Rockies. Fair Winds and Full Sails...Old Salt.

After being in a drought the past 4 years here in North Texas and having friends hit stumps around the lake and damage their boats. Had a Hunter 30 hit an old Oak tree in the middle of the lake and put a 3ft hole in the boat. The only thing that keep it from sinking was that it wedged itself into the tree. Last year it started raining and now everything is full.

Interesting to hear of both Lake Mead and the Great Lakes in the same discussion. Lake Mead is only a few hours from here. I tried sailing there once but there was no wind. The water was pretty low then I hate to think of what it looks like now.

I'll be eligible to retire one year from today and the wife wants to move back to Minnesota where she grew up. With that in mind I hope to sail on Lake Superior by summer 2017.

How good is your admiral's memory? Isn't the unoffiical motto "40 below keeps the riff-raff out" :P

At least it's somewhat sunny while it's cold. The Long Gray is what the locals told me it's called here, and they weren't kidding. We have friends who lived 10 years in Minneapolis before coming here, and they both said they'd rather be in the Twin Cities than here in the winter, even with the cold.

At least you had something. Medina Lake was at 3% capacity (yes, 3%) until the rains last spring. Right now, we are at ~50%, hoping for more rains this year so I won't have to pull out over the end of the boat ramp. Exposed stumps are an issue as is the many shallow area's at the north end of the lake.

I can't think of too many Texas lakes that aren't full of stumps at the edges and lower ends ....it keeps the bass fishermen happy  Ron. :macm: Dauntless.

Your prayers have been answered, Colorado Rockies have an abundance of snow this year. Great for the mountain skiing, but not so good for the mountain home roof... or an old man shoveling the snow off his deck and patio. :? :?

We bid some equipment to work on the new water tunnel project for Lake Meade water to LV. The new intake is around 200 ft lower than the original, and 150 ft lower than the second one. They're hoping for the best, but planning for the worst. I don't know how close it is to uncovering the highest intake, or creating a vortex like a bathtub drain (or whatever), but the fact that all that money is being spent on such a project should at least give pause. But at least they're 'doing something' rather than just hand wringing.

And a lot of snow in the Rockies is always a good thing. :)

How's the looming retirement event coming? Friday (2/10/17) is one year.
