Mac 22 or Venture 2-22?

Post by LoHo »

My Something 22 has MacGregor decals and doesn't mention Venture anywhere on the boat. It is a 1979. The mainsail has the V, but I don't think the number matches the VIN, but I will check. Is there a rule of thumb for which is which?

I found a chart that says a '79 22'er with a pop top is a Venture 2-22....

Rule of thumb is that in mid- late 1970's the Ventures were slowly morphing into the MacGregors....

Well, it should be all the way to a MacGregor by now, right?

I think top at has a point.. Mine is weird, I think it's a 21, but it has a sail with a V... And an original decal that's survived sine 1973 that says Venture.... It might be a 22... Lol

One detail I noticed for my boat, after comparing the boat layouts on sailboat data for Venture 22, Venture 22-2, and Mac 22.
  • The Venture 22 and 22-22 have an hatch aft, just below the tiller.
The Mac 22 has a hatch on starboard seat of the cockpit; nothing by the tiller.
Voila! I have a 1981 Mac 22!

Okay, here goes... Original Venture 222 (we had 1971 model) had a cutout on the transom for the outboard and a well for the gas tank about the size of a large sink with a drain for any water that got into the well. Mac 222 had outboard motor mount attached at the stern. Also Mac 222 has hull liner. V222 does not. What do you think ya got by that description?

I've seen that info before, but what is a 'hull liner' and how do you know if boat has one?
(My boat also has motor mount)

My 1976 Venture 222 hand a hull liner. It also had the outboard mounted on a bracket sticking about 10 inches behind the transom.

Macgregor started installing hull liners in 1974. If the interior is a nice smooth shiny fiberglass it has a hull liner. Originally the interior was made of plywood.
