hello all,

I am wondering if anybody knows of the top of their head what kind/model of Lewmar winch I would have on BWY 2009 26m?

Also what does Self tailor winch mean?

I stripped something inside my starboard winch last summer. I was searching a replacement, they are not cheap! but I found repair kits.

I am no where near a boat, and am trying to figure out how to deal with this.

Yes, winches are expensive. I never use mine. How did you break it?

Self tailing. Means the winch has "teeth" that act as a cleat and allow you to winch in without holding the end of the line.

I never use mine either, but I do so times use the starboard one to crank the main halyard......apparently not a good idea.

Since I never use them, I could probably just switch them around too.

Was looking for info on this recently just because i wanted to service my winches before using them for real...

I use them for the jib sheets, but only to relieve some load from the line in my hand, in case I have to cut it loose under high tension. If you've ever done that, without sailing gloves, and without taking a turn around something first, you'd know why.

I don't crank them, and don't even know where the handles are at this point. I used to use the starboard winch for the mast raising system, but after switching to five parts of line and larger blocks, that's not necessary any more.

But if it were me, I'd make the repair, mostly for the ability to use them as ratcheting belaying pins or big ratchet blocks.

I think the 2009 is the first year when they stopped using the metal Lewmar #6 and went to some plastic winch.
@ sirlandsalot - you may actually not have the Lewmar #6 as referenced in another post.

well this plastic winches are just good for nothing.

Sorry Roger McGregor, mounting this plastic things is just a wrong idea of making money and constructing good boats.

There are many very good things on a Mac26m, but not the winches (also the trailer winch is too small).

The most problem is I need the winch as seldom as never. But maybe one day the winch would be important, even becouse of safety reason. And the you just have this plasitc crap

Our boat is a 2008 and has Lewmar winches.

I would contact BWY and ask them. They will probably have repair kits as well if you need them.

The repai kit of the plastic winch is to replace them with a good one.
If you open the winch you can see that the winch is destroing itself...

If u have the lewmar #6 they maybe just need to be cleaned & relubed thats what I did when mine where sticking , I now have a spare repair kit "jaws & springs " that I did not use , but always handy to have on the boat

Still have never figured out why these boats even have winches on them, unless possibly your a handicapped person with severe physical limitations the sails are much easier to trim, raise etc with normal hand-arm leverage. But it does make the 26 look like a real sailboat I guess.

Guess I better make a trip out to the boat! I don't want to replace something I don't use...especially while trying to save for more canvas.

That would depend on the conditions one chooses to sail in I suppose.

Well, my good friens own a , are very happy, do several months trips, but are 78 years old, and they use the winch to raise the main and control the genua. Thats very ok I think.

And dont forget - you can be injured anytime. The you want tu use the winch - and does not work, becouse Roger mountet crab.

I personnelly never use the winch til now...
