Top Mast Hound location

Post by Crikey »

Can anyone supply me with the measurement of the topmost mast-hound bolt location? I have a severe bend in the mast tip and I am uncertain whether the distance from the top (minus the cap) is: 6ft, 6'1/4" or 6'1/2" to the center of the bolt hole. That little difference probably wouldn't make much of a change in the roller furling rigging but I thought I'd try for some feedback before drilling the new extrusion.

Sorry, my old mast is bent too, and introduces more uncertainty than that.

I don't have an :macm: , so I can't give you a number of course, but from an engineering standpoint it would make more sense to measure from the bottom, which is the surface that's referenced to the tabernacle, as are the shrouds, since the relationship between the chainplates and tabernacle is already fixed and the same with either mast.

Measuring from the top also assumes the mast extrusions are the same length, so tolerance stackup can become an issue if the two extrusions are different. And since no two components are ever exactly the same, it comes down to a matter of degree, but that variable can be totally eliminated by just working off the bottom.

Now that is a brilliant version of 'reverse logic', which completely, incidentally, escaped me! :D :D :D
I tried to put some muscle into it, to straighten it but it wouldn't budge. Just for the heck of it I'll compare the overall length of the mast's, including the extra radius of the bent one and see how things stack up with any noticeable variance between the two. As the top lives as a Bermuda rig (?) it doesn't really mean how tall the mainsail sets...
I'm converting to a moveable boom position so I guess I could perform a 'virtual' reef by dropping the Bimini and lowering the mains'l down to the top of the cabin opening. The real reef would come next.
:?
Must be getting old, or something! :(

Thanks to Tom I got the brain working today and drilled the baby after measuring from the bottom up (doh!). Funny thing - on just about all the holes I've done so far I've noticed many of the original mast drillings were off by as much as 1/4" from the center line for one side. They must have had a miss-aligned jig when they put mine through. The bottom swivel plate actually had the through-bolt tangs offset from one another and if I hadn't paid attention I would have ended up very upset with my self. Measure twice!
Everything is very snug now... :)

Almost! Sadly though, not going to be in time for bringing it up for this year's run in Simcoe. Still got new batteries to buy, and am waiting for the replacement gooseneck to arrive. We seem to be stalked by a continual run of bad luck lately that is interfering with us getting the hull wet, so far this year. Destroyed old garage door needing expensive replacement, riding lawnmower kaput and extensive repairs on a 'borrowed' model from Gabe's friend (an urgent necessity when one is trying to sell house). The list goes on.
The good news is, however, that we're taking delivery of a new F150 ecoboost this thursday - our second new car ever! - and will most likely be up there on friday evening for an overnighter. Would have been sooner but the replacement garage door is being re-delivered on friday and someone has to be home for that to happen. Nothing like paying $500 for a hopelessly smashed item! The only remaining deadline that must be met this year is to have Crikey! ready for berthing at NOL for the youngest daughters wedding this August 11th. Picked up the oldest at TO Intl last night after she flew in from Bangkok. Phew!
Get that outboard running, and it'll be good to sit down with you - see all the winter mods you've been talking about - and drink some of your better Scotch. We're probably going to up-tent in the marina for the night (thanks!). Women are funny that way...

Ross & Gabe. :)

Yep Ross been having some bummer times myself lately just shelved out close to one boat buck on my Merc's engine fuel injection system & thats just parts I'm doing the work myself ! :o otherwise it would be twice that or more with labour costs one perk about being a Tech I think ! :)
Other wise @ least my Mods r coming along, taking longer than usual due to a very long long Winter & a very cold & wet spring & so far a very wet & stormy Summer ,
will be installing my inj. tomorrow Thurs morn weather permiting :)

See Ya Fri J 8)

I have a 26x so can't help with the 26m measurements but did want to just point out that when I got a new mast about 8 years ago, I put a second hound on to raise the forestay attachment point about 4 inches higher than where the shrouds attach. This was to get less mast rake (without having to shorten forestay and furler) since the stock 26x is raked back so far that you can barely sail upwind in winds over 10mph. The mast is still not straight but at least it doesn't round up quite as bad as it used to. Anyway, I sweated the fact that there was this 4 inch offset between the shroud and forestay attachment point, but so far, after 8 years, I still haven't bent or broke anything. No real engineering went into that decision but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
