Weekend outing

Post by sunshinecoasting »

I was going to post this in the Australia forum and then I remembered that you poor guys are still snowed in and need some marine relief, so here's my weekend.

I live near Caloundra which has a narrow channel separating Bribie island from the mainland known as Pumice stone passage, it is very calm most of the time and about 21 Nm long, it does however have one small problem, it is very shallow near the middle section, in fact I was pushing my :macx: through 30cm's (1 foot) of water at times in a section known as "the skids" for obvious reasons. I was however determined to make it from one end to the other and return, it is very picturesque and remote, I had a blast, winds were good and I averaged about 5.5 knotts, I was forced to motor through the shallow sections and put a ding in my prop and a slight bend in my fin at the bottom of the motor leg, all repairable. I stayed overnight for two nights in some very pretty anchorage areas. picture with captions below.

Navionics showing how narrow some of the passage is.

The end of the road, the Bribie island bridge in the background isnt high enough to get under so back I go.

Sorry but for no logical reason this site only allows three pictures, even when referencing Photobucket, I tried to add heaps more.
Cheers, Dennis.

Haha, Entropy: I like it! Entropy is a measure of capacity to NOT do work.

Nice photos!

I was there only a couple of weeks ago....in our camper (Mac is asleep under her/his tarp)....went for a walk along the beach at southern end of Bribie....and was amazed by the stretch of water....words like "we'll have to come back here with Mac"...were uttered...just Googled the area after seeing your pics and even more keen BUT teasing our northern hemisphere perma frosted members is mean!!! :D :o

Of course it's mean.......what,s your point? Lol.

I dont really recommend sailing in the passage, I did it because I wanted the challenge of negotiating the tight channels in shallow water, just what the Mac was designed for, it is very pretty but not really what I call good sailing conditions. Having said that I do recommend the northern end, Caloundra is pretty and has an awesome anchorage with million dollar views, especially at night, the sailing is still quite limited but very relaxing. I wouldnt cross the bar there though, just too dangerous so going to sea from here is not likely. I left my trailer locked to a tree in the boat ramp car park and it was safe for two nights.
