Reversing brake lockout

Hi all,

Considering implementing a mechanical lockout for those occassions when reversing without reversing lights wired to trailer (for vehicles ithout and the boatyard tractor). Is there anything in the outer section of the drawbar - the bit that slides into the larger section. Considering a pin thru this section at the point of entry into the larger square section.

Cheers, Stuart

Hi Stuart --

I use a "key" that fits in the slot through which the pin (the 5/8" or 3/4" one) slides. It came with the trailer- just pull forward and stop gently so the lash is forward, insert this thing on one side; it's shaped to fill the space and prevents the pin from sliding and applying the brakes in reverse (or forward).

I use a piece of Nylon webbing that I slide over it to hold it in place, and have it attached to a lanyard that wraps around the tongue so it's always right there when I need it. Maybe the previous owner lost it? You might be able to get one, maybe easier and cheaper than drilling for a pin? Or maybe easier just to make one?

I made one and then found the original in the bag of bits from the factory, probably still about somewhere? also made a pin to lock the brakes on as it is a req in NSW but we then changed to the aust type with a built in lockout (and handbracke) which was far better and now changed that for hydraulic discs on all wheels with an electric actuator now don't have a handbrake but not req in Victoria where it's now registered, ah state laws hey.

Thanks Boblee & Seahouse - I had no idea that such a key was available!!
