Looking to get the custom steering kit for the However I have a Yamaha 60, they list only the Suzuki or Nissan engines. Wondering if any Yamaha-ers out there have installed it, if so , any major mod need to be done? I'm really only good at bolting stuff.

I've got the same question about the E-TEC 60. Are there different connection pieces needed and available?

I have the E-Tech 60 and If you are referring to the quick disconnect then no other pieces are needed to install.

Yes I was referring to the BWY quick disconnect. Were you able to mount it in such a way, that the engine is strait when lowered and disconnected from the steering? Do you possibly have pictures for that mod?

Yes my eng is dead straight ahead when connect to the steering or in the stationary possition hope this helps u all out & it is a great mod for very easy & fast disconection or reverse

I can't imagine this boat without this awesome device. It makes disconnect a 2 second task.

Sorry I do not have any pics. Yes I was alble to adust it where the engine is straight ahead when disconnected however it is adjusted to the shortest point for our motors.

I installed this on the with the ETEC60- while all the required pieces are there, I could not both align the motor to be pointed straight back when on the solid mount and also be aligned with the rudders when connected to the steering linkage. Search the forum for a discussion of this. I decided to align straight back when on the solid mount and just live with a bit of rudder corrections when using both motor and rudders (slow speed).

I have just gotten around to installing - or rather attempting to install the BWY custom steering on my 26M with Etec 60HP.

There have been comments in this thread that the kit will fit but I am finding that even on the minimum adjustment the linkage is way too long.

I understand that the connected / disconnected position will be a tradeoff. One the two positions - connected / disconnected will allow the motor to be straight. Geometry of the Etec ( protrudes further forward than other motors it seems) will not allow both to be straight ahead.



OK that I can live with but the linkage being too long - what have others done with this? The quick and dirty fix might be to bend the linkage. I think I will tap the thread further down the bar and then cut the excess. But still very interested in what others have done.

Don't take this the wrong way but I am glad I was not alone in this. I figured I had three choices. 1) Live with it (I have done this so far). 2) Move the fixed mount (likely not that hard to do) 3) Adjust the steering where the steering cable interfaces (really do not want to go there)

Dis-connecting the steering on the Mac/Tattoo doesn't make any more sense than dis-connecting your brakes while driving on the freeway just because you're not using them at the time!
With the OBM down, with the steering connected:
Your boat is more maneuverable with the OBM lower unit acting as a third rudder.
There is no decrease in speed.
In light winds you can power-sail.
In heavy winds, you can use the OBM to complete your tack.
In an emergency, there is one less thing to do.
It gives a small boat a big boat feel.

when you have motor down all time. Is ist not much more stress for the teleflex turning all the time when sailing? Becouse there is much more load on the teleflex?

I tested sailing with the engine up or down, too. The difference seemed minimal (maybe a fraction of a knot, but I couldn't tell for sure, since the winds are never constant) For the reasons above (plus the lazy factor) I always sail with the motor down and engaged.

When you are sailing with the motor down and not running, is it better to have the engine "in gear" or in "nuetral" so the prop can spin freely?

I would think in nuetral with the prop spinning would reduce the drag, but is this add unnessasary wear on the engine drivetrain?

I tested it once on my sailing at about 6.0mph. The difference between having the engine up or down was about 0.3mph - 0.4mph.
For me, not worth it. I keep the engine down at all times when moving.
