As many of you know, I have a personal connection in the Philippines. That's where the Hyde Sails production loft is located. I talk to those folks every day by email, and on the phone by Skype. The situation after Typhoon Haiyan is heartbreaking.

The devastation left in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines continues to grow. The Hyde production loft in Cebu, Philippine escaped extensive damage from Typhoon Haiyan, but the communities just 50 miles to the north were in the direct path of the storm.

Hyde employees and affiliates have already raised over $6,000 and sent several truckloads of small but practical assistance to hard-hit communities to the north: food, water, and personal items

Seeing the horrible tragedy firsthand, and how direct aid can make a tremendous and immediate difference, the Hyde team has set a goal to raise $15,000 for materials to build shelters for 25 families who have lost everything. Hyde factory manager Ian Flanders will personally manage the purchase and distribution of materials.

Your kind donation, no matter how small, will make an immediate difference to 25 families rebuilding their lives.

Some one emailed me with a genuine concern about the wisdom of contributing to an un-registered charity. So I thought I'd answer publically

There are many highly respected charity organization you can contribute to. Tops amoung them are the American red cross and the Philippine Red Cross.

This is not a registered, tax-exempt charity. Our effort is more like "paying it forward" rather than making a traditional charity donation. It's all about putting a tarp or piece of metal back on a roof for a family. We don't take a "cut". We just get our truck full of stuff, drive to a small town in need of help, and hand out a kit full of much needed material.

I personally know Ian Flanders, Hyde's factory manager living in the Philippines, who is running this effort. He's honorable. I can vouch for his integrity.

I also want to let the Canadian forum participants (that don't already know) that the Canadian Government is presently (Until Dec 8th) matching equally your donation to help these people in need. As with the disaster in Haiti, this effectively doubles the aid that results from each dollar you give, and so represents a good “bang for your buck” too. And it's tax deductible. How can you refuse that offer?

Hey Cat – I hope this isn't solicitation and is not in violation of forum rules. But if it is, and you have to remove it, I will understand.

The rules may be different in Canada, but just to be clear on Judy's post above, http://www.macgregorsailors.com/forum/p ... 1#pr275114, this is an "unregistered charity". Please check the laws of your country and locality for the destructibility of this donation. I'm not saying to not donate, just don't raise red flags with your revenue department by trying to claim it as a deduction. Donate because i'ts the right thing to do. As Judy said, pay it forward so that when you are in need, someone will do the same.
