etec input needed

Been looking around at motors again .looked at new Suzuki used Suzuki .then I got thrown a curve yesterday .walked in to my local pawn shop and they had a 2009 etec 90 that I could get for around 1200 bucks .wouldn't a etec have a diagnostic port that would tell history and hours ? Can.this be done by a mobile marine mechanic .the new Suzuki I just priced was 8800 and I would rather go that route but I still want a full enclosure and a bunch of other toys like victors handy dandy auto pilot ...any input would be.appreciated.

It has the title with it .its on a 18 foot center console .has a really really nice tandem axle aluminum trailer .the kind that has the aluminum torsion axles ....any way I can get the boat motor and trailer for 3k but I already have the trailer sold for 1750 .has a lot of extras with it .like 2 really nice gel battery's less than a year old .but I need someb;y to check motor out .you can fire it up on the hose and it sounds fine ???

Yes the ETec 90 has a data port and engine time is stored. It requires a special cable and the software can be down loaded. Best bet is to find a local Evinrude dealer who will read the info for a few bucks. You will also want to know what oil the engine is set to use. I still love the etec 90 on my X; a very nice combination.

Perfect any rough performance or or fuel economy numbers you can share ? 99% of the time we run around hull speed !

If the ETEC-90 runs at all it's well worth that price irrespective of engine hours. You can run it on a hose so just I would connect it up and start it. If it runs, definitely buy it.

Yeah- There's a fitting on the back of the motor that has threads for direct hookup to a hose, you can start and run it safely with just that water for cooling. Get it or someone else will, and worry about the data later. There will be a tag on the fuel line under the cowling that will say which oil it's been programmed to use. If in doubt XD-100 will be safe in all cases until you know for sure.

Caution! Put that on the back of your boat and you will be running above hull speed wayyyyyy more than 1% of the time. :D :D :D

The data read out is way cool. It's like a Catscan for motors. Had mine done when I purchased it used.
Total hours of operation, count of over temp operating time, count of over speed conditions,printed correlation graph of engines hrs/rpm, oil setting, etc. A very reliable report.

One more thought. It might not be so as much in SC, but around here one reason for having problems with an outboard is failure to winterize it properly (meaning not at all :) ). Since the fogging and winterization is so simple and fast on an E-tec, it is much less likely to have been abused from improper winterization than some other models.

The data readout might also give the fogging history - then Bob's yer uncle.

hey bahama, If you want to I will buy the etec 90 and you can buy my etec 60 since you don't run above hull speed most of the time. I would hate to see the extra ponies out to pasture before there time. :P :D :D

You like your etec don't you ? How many hours do you have on yours ?they say a etec get get under a gallon a.hour around 5 or 6 knots ????

5 knots and below it's about 0.1 gph per knot, so a half gallon per hour at 5 knots (with a Mac). By 7 knots, you're up to 1.5gph. Soon as you start climbing a bow wave, the efficiency is done.

Went by there today ? Put key in it spun about twenty times wouldn't start .pump bulb up and it cranked right up .been sitting for about 9 months .gas in filter looked kind of.funky .are you supposed to push the key in for cold start ? I offered them.2750.00 for boat .motor and trailer ..its a 2008 motor but it was never titled til 2012 .if I was just gonna bop around o would be all.over it but I wanna do 2 weeks in the keys in Dec and the 3 week trip to Bimini in may so I want a reliable motor.my friend that wants the trailer is having.g fit for it so I may go get it in a.m .

Got the boat motor and trailer for 2750 .sold trailer and a couple other things and have the motor for 750 .its a 2008 but never titled til 2012 .I see they sell the cable and software on ebay .so i guess i will order it .but im more confused than ever .are these motors good engines ? People hate them.or love them ????
