New Mac owner

Hey, I just wanted to chime in as I finally got a mac, a 1980 Mac/Venture 25 specifically. Anyways been a lurker for forever and decided to step in the light

Anyways, it is the light blue hull, and has a full complement of sails(main, lapper jib, storm jib, 150 genny, and a cruising spinnaker) has a 5hp British seagul, autopilot(Raytheon ST2000+) depth finder and all the other fiddly bits along with it, boat was in very good condition(just needs a little spring cleaning), and in case if anyone is wondering, I have been reading the forums on a daily basis since before GreatLooperDave got here

Welcome aboard! Good to see another Mac owner in Virginia. Where do you plan putting in at? I'm in Prince George, just south of Richmond. May move to the Lorton area in the future.

I was looking at the stafford area, still trying to learn the art of sailing as I don't have much practical experience--too much knowing, and thinking, and talking, and not enough doing; but that should change soon. And I think the learning curve will be friendly as I am starting to find out how many sailor friends I have that will use any excuse to get out on the water

Funny, I thought he deleted all of his posts then packed up and left. Anyways I will be picking up the boat next Saturday. This Saturday, I will be picking up the tow vehicle, a mid 80's f-150 w/ a I-6 300, 4speed stick w/ granny gear, and 4x4, I think I shouldn't have too much trouble with the ramps.

I bought and sold a nice 20' pocket cruiser a couple of years ago. In comparison, it seems like you got a very good deal. Lots of extras and apparently well maintained.

Looks like you got a good deal. A lot of stuff to play with.
Some suggestions -
With a boat over 10 years old the running rigging and standing rigging and anchor rode could be decayed. Please check these out. If questionable, replace.
Check out your local Power Squadren, They do have sailing courses and is a good source of info.

Actually I just had a meeting with the Landmark Yacht Club doen in Oquia creek off of the potomac and one of their members are in the power squadron, and several of the members own sail boats and would be more than happy to impart their knowledge.

Sounds like you got an excellent deal. Congratulations and welcome to the fun.
A co-worker had a mac 25 and had me out on it a long time ago. Pretty neat boat. It had a steel swing keel and a winch , and the mainsheet was on a traveller line across the stern. if I recall. The keel and winch system would be another thing to give a good once-over before launch.
