Minn Kota Power Up (tilt/trim unit) DOA

Finally getting back to the trawlerization of my 2000 26X. Looks like the Johnson 25 hp in place will run fine. That means, I can use my almost new Johnson 15 hp for auxillary on a starboard lift mount. However, push button tilt and trim on the primary motor would be so nice in the shallow waters where I boat.
The boat also came with a Minn Kota Power Up unit mounted between the transom and the motor. It doesn't function = appears that the electric motor has a dead short. Can these be rebuilt?
Minn Kota no longer markets these units but the successor company that sells similar units (CMC or CMS?) wants about $600 for a replacement. I really like the 6-7" set back that the Minn Kota gives the motor. If I can get parts or repair the existing tilt/trim unit, that would be great.
Anyone else have good or bad experiences with these or suggestions?
