Mantus Anchors

Just received my new 25lb Mantus anchor and was impressed by their packaging in a wooden box. :)
Being able to break it down solves the storage issues we have with new generation anchors on the :macm: .
The Mantus is going to be used on grassy or otherwise difficult bottoms to complement the Fortress I use for sand and mud.

Not to divert from this brand of fun, but what size Fortress are you using, and how do you like it? :)

I use the F11 and it works well so far. Fortress has the clear weight advantage over other Danforth types.

Thanks. I've used primarily Danforth (and knock-offs) and Bruce (also Claw, a knock-off) types, but only in mud and sand. I've never had to anchor in heavy weeds, but that may change as I start poking about in different sailing areas, far from home. Which is half the reason I got this boat.

Be sure to give us the play-by-play when you put the new one to work. 8)

As with any ground tackle, make sure those bolts are locked tight.

I received my 35# mantus just before Sandy struck. The folks over at sailnet had a big thread on it. there are a couple of well informed members who did some test and foud it to be great in holding in all types of bottom conditions. Can't wait to try it out.

Uncle Jim,
I talked with the designer at the Miami Boat Show and he figured the 13lb may be enough for the Mac but recommended the 25lb to have a significant safety margin.

we have a 35# CQR on our 38 Ohlson. works quite well and is easy enough to haul it in.

The FX11 works quite well, and fits in the M locker. sets, but doesn't reset well in weeds. I bought a small delta plow for weeds for the Mac. That worked like a charm. light and easy to store.

The lastest practical sailor testing is giving a lot of kudos to the Spade anchor's ability to set quickly and, more importantly, reset the fastest when the wind/current changes.

Any case, the anchor is only as good as the captain who sets it! A good anchor set with poor scope or incorrect bottom for the anchor won't hold in a good blow...or when the wind changes at 3am :) Been there..done that!

I had a 22# Bruce on my Hunter 34. Worked great. Easy to retrieve and set. Like it so much so I bought one for my Mac. At 22lbs it's probably overkill, but the 16lb seemed too small.

Also had a Danforth HT but rarely used it. The Bruce fits nicely on the roller.

Don't even think about carrying a Danforth type anchor now IMHO they are just not reliable even in sand, use a Sarca and a Rocna which look similar to your Mantus but think the bolt together bit would put me off, just another weak point.

Boblee,
There are 4 bolts; each of them has enough breaking strenght to lift the :macm: free of the water, with lots of safety margin to spare, if the deck hardware would not be ripped out in the lift. :P
No worries 8)

what year was your 34? any suggestions on redoing the keel?

Here's a 4-1/2 minute 'commercial' youtube video of the Mantus.

And another of the similar Rocna.

Bear in mind that these folks are selling these products, so take them with a grain of salt (sand?). I have no connection to any of them, and have never even used either style anchor. (I don't want to get Mod-smacked. ) But watching these vids is an interesting way to spend a few minutes in the middle of winter. Beats shoveling the driveway, which I'm putting off. :D But I digress . . .

I've only used Danforth and Bruce types, plus a couple of others very small ones for lunch hooks.

In fact, I too had a relatively puny looking 22 lb Bruce on my Hunter 340 (12,000 lb loaded), and it set and held like mad in Lake Ontario. I'd use a smaller Bruce on my :macx: , but the locker is too small for that shape I believe, and I don't have a bow roller. But the Danforth seems to work well for that bottom, and I have an 'oversized' one below for emergencies.

But if I was going to spend the money on another anchor, and had a way to store it ready to deploy, I'd probably give the Mantus or Rocna a try, too.

It was an '84. Had the yard scrape it down an epoxy coat it once.
