Evinrude Etec 60 bought from MacGregor with my boat 2012
We love our boat. That's first.
Our new Etec 60 has performed outstandingly.
I'd like to know if other 26M owners are also satisfied with their Etec 60s.
Ours has been ultra economical on fuel and oil. Very surprised.
Power to spare. We don't pull skiers.
Mainly harbor use and getting out to the ocean wind.
Usually run it between idle and 2,500 rpm.
Never maxed it out. No need so far. Wind is free.
Appreciate anyones feedback on this outboards performance.

It performs better than an ETEC 50 but not as well as a 90
I liked it at first but as boat got more junk and more weight a 90 would be nice
But it depends on your usage. If you never take the 60 over 2500RPM a 40 would do.

I've had mine for one season. Very happy so far. It seems economical on gas, but then I just use it as you do. Getting in and out of the harbor and heading for home when the weather gets too scary. (Which seems to happen occasionally up here on Lake Superior!)

Same comments here. I've had my Mac for two years now and I am impressed by the whole package. I took the boat from Miami to Bimini in horrendous weathers and the tiny little E-Tec purred for 7 hours without ever making a blip. It starts with half a rev and even with low batteries. Consumption is great and I am impressed by the alternator as well as it seems to charge at very low rpms.
Do give it some time at higher rpm to make sure you are cleaning out the cylinder heads. I always try to run WOT at least for 5 minutes at each outing.
Check out the videos posted on the Evinrude website, they are pretty fun!
Cheers,
Fred

Re: Evinrude Etec 60 bought from MacGregor with my boat 2012
I have the Etec 60 and very happy with it. Tried hard with the dealer to get a 4stoke Honda or Suzuki but he insisted the Etec was the way to go. Lighter, less moving parts, 3 years between services. In the end i went with his recommendation.
I leave it for months on end without starting, stale fuel, no prep before leaving it other than fresh water flush and a hose down. Into third year now and it starts on first turnover every time. Not that I am recommending such lazy engine maintenance
I just don't have time to drain fuel, or put additives in. Yes I am a slack so and so...
I think it is a bloody great outboard.

Re: Evinrude Etec 60 bought from MacGregor with my boat 2012
I have a 2009 etec 40hp. Came with the boat. Really not sure why the previous owner did not go with a 50 or 60. I haven't seen anyone talk about etec40 or indicate they have one. One problem I am having with it is it starts choking and stalling when I try to go WOT. I changed out the fuel filter but no difference. I cleaned out the gas tank and use premium fuel to no avail. One thing i noticed last fall when I was winterizing was that when I detached the gas line at the tank and pumped the bulb to hardness, the hose started to 'sweat' gas slightly. AH HA! I'm thinking I need to replace the supply hose as it is probably sucking air! I will do that for the coming season and hopefully will solve the problem. Other than that it seems to purr along just fine at lower rpms.

I echo the above happy experience of innervations - including original desire for a 4-stroke.
Except that:
- I do keep the fuel fresh; and
- I never flush the cooling system even though I run always in salt water.
I follow the manual suggestion that flushing is not required and leave the engine stored vertical on the trailer.

Ditto all on Luna Sea (west). Love the ETEC-60. Small size is (relatively) easy to scramble around. Two years so far, zero maintenance, zero problems. one qt. of oil used. Left the boat "on" once for a week while we were gone and killed the battery--rope started it on the second pull. Charges the battery with just about any use at all, so we've been able to keep just the single battery without issues, and the ability to rope start it makes it requiring a separate starting battery not necessary. Great low hull speed mileage, decent hull speed mileage.
Can't imagine being happier with a motor unless it had 30 more hp.

We did a ninety mile coastal cruise from in southern Ca.
Not all winds were favorable. 14 hours of sail/motor sail and some
maneuvers in two marinas.
Didn't use even two gallons of fuel.

Re: Evinrude Etec 60 bought from MacGregor with my boat 2012
I had the etec 60 also straight from the factory. At first there seemed to be no speed at all (max speed 5 knts), very good service from the Evinrude dealer in Dubai, they immediately saw that the propeller was not the right one for a
, they changed it to a bigger one, free of charge despite of the fact that the engine came with the boat straight from the USA. Now, when the kids want to have fun, I can push it up to 20 knots/ 5,000 rpm.
I've had the Macgregor since October 2012 and been playing around with both sail and engine, and only fueled up once (two tanks).
Best regards,
Ahmed

Re: Evinrude Etec 60 bought from MacGregor with my boat 2012
The main problem I have had with my 2006/7 60hp E-tec has been fouling of the idle exhaust filter.
It can cause the motor to stall at critical moments such as when going into reverse when docking or approaching a ramp.
The filter needs regular servicing and its location means that it is not easy for the average boater to to.
Other than that, I love my 60hp E-tec - very economical, lots of power when I need it , and (usually) very reliable.

Re: Evinrude Etec 60 bought from MacGregor with my boat 2012
We had problems with our 50hp etec until finally the 2006 powerhead was replaced with a 2011 model, it now runs very sweetly although on a recent rip pf 280k's I noticed it was a running a bit rough so had to give it a few good squirts at 2-3000 rpm to clean some gunk out as most times we were only doing 1000-1500 rpm due to shallows and difficult navigation.
As for economics the particular 280k trip GPS is the first time I have ever taken much real notice long term and at just over 40l pushing a heavily laden
and towing the 3.6 alum dinghy if worked out at 8kph that is 35 hr's running, it makes the 50 hp 2 stroke Merc on our poly boat look absolutely sick.
Over the weekend fishing with the polyboat I filled the 25 litre tank and it looks like there is about 5l left for very little use most of it trolling speed to under 2000rpm but max 4hrs running but more likely 3.
The biggest problem for Etecs here is the lack of dealers especially outside the capitals or away from the coast and their exclusivity for the computor diagnosis program, if other mechanics could diagnose this would be alleviated.
Note the original powerhead was as economical as this one and started just as good but had unexplained roughness and I just wasn't prepared to take it to some of the remote places with the wife on board.
