Cool Application - only barely Mac related...

Don't know how many of you have used this application, but for those of you that haven't, you gotta try it. See Keyhole.com... It's major league addicting!

The gist of it is that they take satellite photos and then allow you to tilt and rotate the screen, appearing virtually 3-D.. and then you can actually 'fly' over the surface, as if you were in a plane. I'll tell you, every time I use this thing I am blown away. You can download a 'try-before-you-buy license that will go for a few days, or spring for the $$ and have *hours* of fun!

One sort-of Mac :macm: / :macx: use is that you can fly over an area you want to sail and see what it 'should' look like from the air. Also good for when you are planning on going somewhere and don't quite know the 'lay of the land'. Of course, they don't have detail for all areas as good as they have for some others, but it's cool all the same. The major metropolitan areas are covered, as are many cities around the globe (you can even see the bomb damage on buildings in Bagdad!!)

Now, just as an example, anybody out there know where this is?

Here are some others you may be able to guess....
(EDIT: I made them into links so that those of you on a slow link won't have to wait forever for this page to load!!)

Big pointy building...Pictue #1

My 'other' boat (just a little ol' thing)...

And a national landmark...
Picture #3

And just to show you how detailed you can get, here's a close-up of the barge in the photo above...

And finally.. the place I *love* to sail... I usually tie up the boat to the small island near the bottom center of the photo... any guesses as to where this is? (oh, and Chuck Healey, you don't get to play on this one... it's too easy for you! :)

Well, Terry, you're right with these...

# 1 - Empire State Building
# 2 - Queen Mary
# 3 - Golden Gate Bridge

Still need the answers for the first picture, above, and the last one (Poplar Island)... and Catigale, you're on the right track on that first one!

Looks like a cool site. Since I'm in a motel with a 24K dial up connection I think I'll wait till I get home to the DSL before I check the site out. I tell you, the Poplar island area looks a lot different this time of year when it's covered with ice. There is also a web cam based on Rattlesnake Island. It's a great way to check the lake conditions before you go out. Ofcourse all you see is snow this time of year. When I figure out how to post links on the message board I'll put in a link to it.

This past summer, a guy started a new company that flys helicoptors over boats while sailing and shoots pictures. He has a banner advertising the website to see your boat so he can sell you the pictures. Good idea.

This past summer I saw one of these Helos flying around over the Narragansett here near Newport.

A buddy actually called them up to see if they got pix of his boat - which they had - but the price was extremely high and he passed up getting a print.

Get me an address... and we'll see!

(Edit: I found the address - 10236 Charing Cross Rd., Los Angeles, CA 90024... but I need to get off my 'work' internet line before I can go do a Keyhole scan!... check back here later...)

Edit #2 - OK, I got it, but I'm not sure I can make out the 'grotto' in this pic... sorry... and looks like Hef didn't have any bathing beauties outside this day!!
