26D Motor Mount Question
I am looking to change the mount for my Outboard motor (9.9hp, 25" Shaft Nissan ) on out 26D.
When not using the motor (in slip, or even out sailing for a while) - I wanted to lift it out of the water - and may be tilt at an angle. But the motor is a long (25") shaft motor.
I had looked at a Garelick mount - but wondered - any suggestions out there????
I looked at a mount for two reasons: (a) steering by moving the motor in a greater radius and (b) keep lake gunk water out of the motor when not using... ditto for saltwater...

thanks...

Re: 26D Motor Mount Question
I can tilt - but it will not clear the water. The motor mount on a 26D is farily low...

Re: 26D Motor Mount Question
sounds like what you're asking about is a bracket that also raises/lowers...like what you see for a kicker on the back of a (gulp) powerboat...
I've also seen them on the back of larger sailboats, but not often, as larger sailboats tend to have inboards...
Check THIS out and see if it's what you have in mind.

Re: 26D Motor Mount Question
Is the transom at the outboard lower on the D vs the S? I was thinking we had the same 9.8 extra long shaft Tohatsu and ours is quite a ways out of the water, but we did raise it 5 inches on the ....dvideohd wrote:I can tilt - but it will not clear the water. .... new mount and maybe that is the difference. Here is a not so good picture...

...on the water and it looks to be more than 5 inches out of the water. The mount comes off in less than a minute and then the outboard could sit down on the motor well.....

....like above. Maybe make something like these?

The controls are a lot easier to get to and we didn't have any problems with the prop coming out of the water in Florida as it is as far down as a long shaft. Is the problem that the outboard hits inside of the well before it is in full tilt?

Re: 26D Motor Mount Question
We mounted directly to the boat... I think D and S mounts are the same..
5" would make a big difference...
we had steering problems - (very tight in the well... )

Re: 26D Motor Mount Question
Humm.... Was the motor oversized for the well?
I know most of the motors I see in the D are about a 4-5 hp but haven't seen a 9 or 10 yet in them.

Re: 26D Motor Mount Question
I have a Johnson 7.5 on my 26D. It doesn't want to lift or turn either. Well the handle gets in the way, is the problem. I like Sumners idea and may copy it.

My Honda 9.9 extra-long shaft tilts well out of the water: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22305097@N ... 9510767967 Have it on power tilt & electric start, fixed by a bracked: no steering with it. Once I got the gist of it, I manage to steer in & out of slips in any kind of marina I've been. Not much room in the well for the motor to swing around (Mac 26s). Albert Fischer s/v Madelon

Re: 26D Motor Mount Question
For 9.9hp Honda, did you do any significant reinforcement to the transom? I just got a great deal on an 8hp Honda... much like yours, electric start, 4-stroke, etc and was wondering if I would need to add additional reinforcement.
Thanks,
Carolyn

Re: 26D Motor Mount Question
Carolyn, I am not sure if the picture is clear enough: http://macgregorsailors.com/modt/index.php?viewimg=2788 but I bolted the motor mount through the transom and put on the outside a piece of nylon cutting board, about 1/2 in thick that you can get in a supermarket/Target/Wallmart, etc.. It is pretty tough and has done a great job since 2008; essentially to cushion the weight of the mount and enable a tight fit (since the "lip"of the engine well rim does not allow the motor mount to lean flush against the transom wall). The previous owner of my boat had allowed plenty of water to get into the traasom and, although I did a lot of work trying to dry it out, I always remained suspicious of its integrity. Therefore, I put on the inside another board of 3/4 in thick HDPE. The bolts go through that and I used stainless steel fender washers and lock nuts to secure the whole thing. If your transom (has a wooden board sandwiched within the fiberglass) is intact, then you don't need this extra piece. The rim of the motor well easily cracks with the weight of the engine and the vibrations and I have used the classic rubber mat as cushion, but never worked well. I reconstructed this rim and now the engine is bolted in such a way that a 1/4 - 1/8 in gap remains between the engine mount and the top of the rim; i.e., the engine is not sitting on the rim. I trailer the boat with the engine mounted on it and it has been fine for years. Hope this helps. Albert (s/v Madelon, Mac 26s)

Re: 26D Motor Mount Question
Thank you for that information. I was down in the Laz over the weekend, redoing cockpit and motor well drains as well as doing some electrical.. The piece of fiberglass ply appears intact, but I do not trust that there is not some rot that I cannot see. I have several of those cutting boards I bought at Sam's Club that I am going to use to reinforce.
Again, thanks for the info.
