Morning everyone,

As I usualy do, like to check for Mac's on craigslist. Found one this morning - looks like San Jose, CA area, 1996 MacX, looks like it is in decent shape, $8,900, Tohatsu 50.

Link: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/boa/2684439526.html

Contact poster of Mac: Reply to: sale-mxwbb-2684439526@craigslist.org

No connection with me or my :macx:

If someone gets really serious about the this Mac and you are at distance, be happy to help out where I can.

Cheers

What is a zero feedback steering upgrade? Would that be the same as in a 2000 x?

I called the guy, he is the second owner. The steering upgrade is something he made himself, so who knows if that is good or bad. He will take $8500 for people like myself that need to travel to purchase it. I bet he would take $7500 cash in his face.

what are the chances that its a scam?
We did have on up in Canada here a while back, guy grabed some UK pics, and copy/pasted some random specs. then when you emailed him he said it was out of town (far form you...).. bla bla bla. you know how the rest of the story goes.

Kevin,

Where in Canada are you. Could be worth the drive. If it were me, I would look at it (or have me do it), talk with the guy 3 or 4 times over a week or two, maybe even 3, and then tell him that I couldn't make up my mind, drag it out - Long drive, not exactly what you're looking for, etc. . . Ask what his bottom line is. . . I suspect that if its still around by that time, maybe you would be looking in the $6000 to $7000 range, with an outside chance at $5500. Then it would be worth the drive even if you are in say, Manitoba, or even western Ontario. Maybe even store it till summer and take a vacation out here in sunny Cali, and sail it on the bay, that's S.F. Bay. :D before taking it back home.

Cheers,

He sounded legit. Call him. I am out because I want a later model X, without the wood in the cockpit floors, and I prefer the stairs over the step.

Zero feedback steering system does not allow pressure on the rudders to turn the wheel. In theory this will keep the boat on coarse. But in a sailboat and especially in a Mac this is not very effective.

My question? If this boat is "fairly" priced ? Why try to beat this guy up?? I live by that Code and there by seem to live well.. Call It Karma Call it by any name you desire..

I think he's talking about the balsa wood core in the pre 2000 model?

Not if you're under 300#s. Or don't have any consistant subfloor leaks

If that's a fair price, within your budget& expectations go for it. What may be adeal breaker is whether it has the aluminum vs SS rudders and how you feel about them. Re: that, ask aluminum rudder owners. Mine were replaced by the PO.
