Magnet Fishing

Today in Harbor Freight, I found a giant 250 pound pull magnet.
I am thinking about dropping this over the side to see what it might be that I would catch.
I would use a double sheet to the magnet so if it finds the bumper of an old Buick, I can let go of one end and get the sheet back.
Have any of you gone Magnet fishing?

Harbor Freight you say huh?
I may have to buy one.
I lost a camera overboard last year. I GPSed the spot and would love to try to retrieve the thing because the SD card had some good pics. Should survive maybe.

a lot of bars and fuel docks in the Fla Keys have those for getting dropped keys. works quite well.
just use a wire, or heavy rope. -with mono it might break if you get an anchor.

I used a magnet like this to retrieve my keys after dropping them in the lake.
The remote in the key fob worked even after being underwater for 2 weeks!
Fortunately I wasn't in Iron County (I would've gotten the magnet stuck on the bottom).
It also works great for those tools that try to commit suicide by drowning.

Isn't that a statement about the user??

Westmarine has something like this. Kids love to throw it over the side and pull it back up.

We have a cove on our lake called "Anchor Bay" because of all the lost anchors. It would be fun to try to hook one with this thing. Hmmmmmmmm.

Too bad gold isn't magnetic....
Watch out you don't latch onto a Seawolf! Carry a good knife, just in case.

I retrieved my cell phone from 20 feet of water in a lake. I dropped it in off the dock and came back a week later with a fish camera with a 3-prong hook dangling off the nose. (Not enough magnetic material in the phone for a magnet to work.) I hooked it while my wife guided me from the camera display. I opened it up, soaked it in alcohol, dried it out and the only thing that doesn't work is the speaker phone.

Haven't done much real magnet fishing as it has been described, but I have used the tool below to pick up screws and such that I've dropped in inaccessible places.

Works like a charm.
