Dry Head vs Traditional Porti-P

In the rebuild of my Mac 25, I am not going to use a wet system for the Porti-P, am I missing something?

I have a motor home, with a porcelain toilet, holding tanks, and the whole nine yards. In the summer, you flush out the fresh tanks, getting out the antifreeze, refiling the water tanks. Then all summer long you refill tanks, empty grey and black tanks, and in the fall, you antifreeze everything again.

Royal Pain in the ...

On my boat, the last thing I want is more chores. So no water anywhere. No plumbed fresh, no grey and no black water, and no antifreeze to mess with. (maybe a little in the hold just in case)

My potti will work more like a cat box than a toilet. Cat litter (one company calls it pooh powder) to absorb moisture if needed, all going directly into double sacked liners, that also gets placed in a plastic sack till a disposal opportunity. I want to keep it simple.

Why do you folks mess with heads using water?

When you are through using it for the weekend, place it in a plastic sack, add some water and a little Clorox, and shake it for several minutes. Rinse it off with a hose or a little lake water, and the whole unit is clean as new again. Folds up to the size of a briefcase. Can be used as a small dining table.

I like the touch of having the drink holders but where's the magazine rack?

We think the bags are great and I learned about them on this site :) .

I hated cleaning a porta-pottie when I used one in the past.

This is simple and clean and the best part you don't have to plan a trip around finding a place to go ashore and walk past everyone with them knowing exactly what you are doing and then trying to find a place to empty it without making a mess. The bags seal real easy and you are done.

The head mod...

... and here is more on how we use them...

...and to add to that we now store the bags in one of those under $3.00 five gallon buckets with the snap-on lid and just throw the whole bucket in a dumpster when we end the trip. That is nicer to the guys that empty the dumpster and quick and easy to do.

Also get some of the freshener West Marine sells for holding tanks and porta-potties and put in a couple capfulls after each use and that really helps with the smell while using it.

It amazes me on how reluctant people are to use these. We were until we tried them and love them. We couldn't of made our last trip or some of the other ones with a porta-pottie.

Gary,

I have exactly the system you show in your pictures. It is a PETT system. Works great. Just carry the bags off the boat with the rest of the trash. Much neater and easier process IMHO.

Cheers,
Jim

I'll stick with my composting head. No mess, no smell and it's Pirate tested and Pirate approved.

Here's the mod that inspired my selection.

My setup is slightly different as I ran the vent to the Inside lower corner of the skylight to give more head room.

The overall height of the unit seems pretty high. How is overall head room in the M. Not much room there with regular 5 gallon PP.

It is taller than the port-poti. A minor sacrifice considering. I relocated the vent fed from the mod posted to allow for more headroom. What sold me on the composting solution was the no smell promise. And the product certainly delivers as promised.

We'd might be interested in one of these, but I still haven't figured out how to get past the 60 uses deal. At that point can you just dump it and dispose of it somewhere? If so where legally?

Seems like when I studied up on this before you have to let the composting go on after the last use. If so how long? Would we have to use something else during that time or could it finish composting in another container?'

Let's say you were going to be out 3-4 months, what would the routine be like?

Thanks,

Sum

You can buy additional holding tanks that would allow you to swap out old for new. I personally don't see me out for 3-4 months so the solution works great for me. I expect to have a couple of weeks between sails at some point when I can dump. You can put the compost in the yard just not on any edible vegetation.

So if I understand that right you get a second tank and let the composting finish in the original one and then start using the new one? Do they have the price of the tanks on the site and do you have a link?

We are the only species on the planet that makes a big deal out of everything we do. Everything. Even taking a d**p. I want the simplest answer from down zipper to up zipper. No water, no storage, no fussing, no nothing. Quick and easy, over done with, move on to something else. The Sumner mod makes the most sense in my way of thinking.
