Newbie question ... (#1)

Trying to attach a five pin flat connector to the trailer harness on my Astro Van and can't seem to find any diagrams. I think one of the wires is for the reverse lights on the van to the trailer harness to disengage surge brakes for reversing.

Anyone know where a diagram might be for the Mac 26M steel trailer with surge?

remember that extra wire you are talking about hooking up to your back-up lights will only work if you have the brake de-actuator cylinder installed on the trl :o . I priced the actuator & the efort to install & figured it was not worth the price or effort to install

Some Mac trailers must come with the brake de-actuator. I bought my 26m used (so I'm not sure if the original owner installed), but I can not back the trailer up without either (a) having the 5 wire plug connected, or (b) sticking a bolt in the slide to keep the trailer brakes from engaging.

is installed by factory on new aluminum trailors, not sure about older inferior steel trailors

While the surge brakes are optional, any trailer that has the surge brakes should have the de-actuator as part of the system. We ordered ours with factory surge brakes last year and the actuator was included as well as already installed.

If you have surge brakes (M trailer) you have the lock out solenoid. It is part of the actuator from UFP. You will have a flat 5 connector The lock out wire is the last pin (opposite side of the ground)

If you do not have surge brakes, you do not have a lock out solenoid (obviously) , and have a flat 4 connector

I don't know if anyone would order the trailer without the brakes. It is amazing how well the brakes work. Our old trailer's brake line failed.. it trailered poorly. When I got my new(to me, used) trailer, I put a new line and actuator on.. Just amazing how much better it towed.

Looks like the change came with the :macm:

I got one of the last :macx: in 2002, with the super fast latest white paint, and got surge drum brakes without a solenoid.

Ive since upgraded to discs with a lockout solenoid.

The positive comments that I have received over the years on my :macx: exceed the negative ones. However, the negative ones are almost exclusively from a bunch of blowhards who like to hear themselves talk. I always like the ones who think they have just invented the printing press for the first time when they inform me that "my boat is a compromise and not a proper sail or powerboat". I generally try to end those conversations with a comment along the lines of "what do you mean, it is the fastest sailboat in the marina and the best sailing powerboat on the river".

Well, our boats are compromise boats. Doesn't sail really well or motor really fast. But who really cares. It serves a purpose. For a 26' boat that can be pulled by a normal vehicle, it is very roomy inside and fun to use.

How many 26' boats do you know of that get as much use as the Mac?

The lockout solenoid is an option. I have an M trailer with surge brakes, but no lock out solenoid, and it has the 4 pin connector. To lock out the surge brakes requires that a mechanical key be inserted into the slot on the actuator.

I didn't think Macgregor even offered surge brakes without the lockout solenoid.

The only option when we got ours was no brakes, or brakes with the solenoid. Never saw a third option brakes without solenoid.

Must be a pain to have to put the key in every time you have to back up! You could always get the solenoid and put it between the brake line and actuator..

Well I will be checking my trl its a 2008 Alum, I beleive it has the 5 pin connector but I definatley know the trl manaul says its a option thats avail. . so as I said after checking out the price & the installation instuctions I said to myself I'm not that lazy I can walk that far !. But now after hearing from some of the guy's who have the Alum trl I'll take a look to see if their is actualy one their as I never bothered to look after reading it was an option in the manual !! :o
If its their I'll be hooking it up :D
