Here's the question.

What do you guys think is the value of a 2002 is with a 8hp motor? The boats I see for sale all have large engines. The boat itself is in pretty good shape, no major problems.

Here are the other specs.
jib, jenoa, main in good condition (no furler system or main sail cover)
No built in stove, Butane table top stove included (brand new) and one burner electric stove (used)
Custom Galley insert with maximum storage under galley. (see mods section)
everything is stock with exception of Bomar hatch installed in sliding hatch (mods section) and hatch adjuster for the front hatch.
2- fans installed in cabin
1- 6 gallon fuel tank
2- new fenders.
2- life line cushions (new)
2003 Garmin GPS (I think)
VHS radio and 2 accessory plug pre installed by dealer.
2 sliding storage drawers installed in aft berth (one port, one starboard) for clothing storage
all storage areas are painted out with marine top coat (white) to make areas more usable.
Shore power with 3 outlet and 6 interior shore power lights (low voltage) with 2 light switches.

The trailer needs work but is not beyond repair.

I may have an opportunity to trade the boat for a 30 ft Cheoy Lee, so I need an idea of what to expect for the trade. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would think that the equipped boat hull itself with trailer would be worth about $11K. The normal 30-50 hp outboard would add another $2-4K. A nine yr old used 8 hp motor can be had for about $600-800. Hope this helps.

You should expect the trade to be half the "value" of the boat, and less in the winter months.

The estimate above 13-15k is pretty good imho..

Right now is the worst possible time to sell a boat .
When I first put my power cruiser up for sale , nearly two years ago , the book value was in excess of $20,000.00 , it has decreased to 1/2 that amount since then .
It isn't the years so much as the economy . Banks are just about refusing to finance a boat .
If they do it will be less than wholesale value .

Our cruiser is a 2002 model , excellent condition , we bought new and made many improvements to . Every body who looks at it says the same thing
"IT should sell quickly " but in spite of national advertising it just sits there !

Is it still for sale?

Thats new or used boats.

There's always IOU's - they're just as good as cash.

I am so desperate to sell our Bayliner , I am just about ready to accept an IOU !

Since I was on the market recently I will give you a buyer's perspective. Most likely someone looking for a will not be satisfied with a 8hp, so a new owner would have to either install a new engine, around 6k, or 3k for a used 50hp plus installation. I think it would be hard to sell if the price of the boat plus a used 50hp outboard is more than the market value of a with a 50hp and similar equipment. Take into account that the buyer would still have to deal with the installation of a new outboard plus selling the old one compared to the other boats that already have a 50hp. On the other hand, I think that a buyer that would like to put a bigger engine from the beginning (60 plus) would be more interested.

Also, do't limit yourself to local listings (my range was 1000 miles but would have gone further for the right boat), but consider how much work the trailer needs for a longer trip.
I agree with others that right now it is a buyer's market. Also, banks are not giving loans for sailboats that are more than 5 years old (or maybe they just wanted me to buy a instead)

Having just been thru this...

1. Banks ARE giving loans - my credit union approved my financing in one day (twice, once in Aug and again in Feb) - I understand the "new" credit scoring process favors length of time at your place of employment.

2. Engines. Not many used 50hp outboard motors around - and each manufacturer has it's own mounting holes and control harness, so if you have say a merecury 50hp, and you are considering replacing/upgrading - a change in manfacturer means a fair amount ofr work (cash) to mount it and install the controls.

3. I'm having very good luck with uship (www.uship.com) for getting quotes on shipping.

From an owners perspective (not in the market either buying/selling) I think it would be much easier to sell a boat with an 8HP given that that motor is so much easier to sell and thus has a known value of 750 USD say.

The new owner can buy exactly the engine they want and have it mounted and supported locally to their perfection....not usually an option with buying a used boat.

...at least that is the pitch I would make if I were selling....

I think 14k is a fair starting price. I just over hauled the steel trailer with new drum brakes (galvanized backing plates), new galvanized rims with new tires, new u bolts and backing plates for the springs. The trailer is ready to haul anywhere. I push the fact that #1 a 9 year old 50 hp motor doesn't add that much value, plus the 8 hp motor isn't through bolted and they can put any size/brand motor on it that they want without having to fill any pre-drilled holes.
I've spent over $1,200 on parts for the boat and trailer within the last year. If I dont sell it before my friend sells the boat I want to buy, I will probably keep it.

As a future buyer of a Macgregor I would have to say i would expect your boat to be the lowest on the market. I'm sorry to say that but its like you are offering half a Macgregor. Plus your list of upgrades is lacking. Now at the right price i would be interested.
