What Size of Bow Fender ?

Post by FinallySailing »

I know I should have just measured, but I am quite a bit away from my Mac 26S at the moment and due to order some bits and bobs for our boat.
What size of bow fender do you use ?

I don't understand what you mean by a "bow fender"? I used two fenders on each SIDE, one a little fore and one a little aft of midship on either side and that worked fine.

Maybe they are not used in North America a lot ? They are U or V shaped and are put at the front of a boat. Great when you are berthing bow on (front first) and they may also give you some protection from your anchor chain.

In NA, we like to slow down when pulling up to a slip, or mooring. Otherwise :o :

Hi,

You'll rarely, if ever, see a bow fender in NA unless it's on a working boat like a tug. Moorage is almost always a side tie with bow and stern spring lines, rather than the bow or stern to the pier moorings you'll see in Europe. I have a bow fender I brought back from a trip to England. Never have needed it here in the states.

That said, some of our UK brethren could advise you on what they use. The Mac is a light displacement boat for it's length compared to a keel boat, so you may not need a large one depending on your situation. Do you keep your boat slipped, or on the trailer?

I use one about a foot long..tie it to the pull pit on the ort side and then its a step for when you've beached, you push her back in and up onto the step...job done....thats about all there good for..

I use on my Mac26M front-fender in approx. following dimensions:
Diameter in the middle 180mm
Length of each "arm" 400mm
Here in Europe it´s very useful, because most common mooring is front or stern of the boat oriented to land. And because of engine in the back, up-front mooring is most comfortable in most marinas.

Hi Rick
There is a new type of bow fender called a rigid sprung bow protector. I cant seem to insert a picture for you here but you can see it on ebay. Just the job.

Stuart is talking about this.

I have seen pictured somewhere a person tying a child's floatation device around the bow.

Update: Found a Mod for that! http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/in ... ?view=1567 Image
