Bowsprit Project

Ok my new project is starting to take shape. It will extend two feet past the bow and one foot on the bow for attachment. I am going to covered in fiberglass cloth and painted black to match the boat. I will attach it using four fasteners and bond it to the boat using Pro-Seal or possibly Hysol.
Once i get done shaping it to the bow the I am going to tapper it down to about one inch thick at the end. it will also have a cable from the end to the bow eye with a quick disconnect so I can still put it on the trailer.
P.S. Summer where did you get the S smilie and how can i get one?

Grady,
I updated my 1983 Compac 19 to a later version that required a Bowsprit with Bobstay . I also had new stainless bow and stearn pulpits along with total out fit. The Bow Sprit was a Teak annd Stainless steel rim with bow roller from Compac.
This cost me $500 at the time back in 2003 and I installed.
Here is the drift.
By installing the bow sprit I was able to reduse weather helm on this boat big time, also alowed me to have a bow roller to hang my anchor on all times and easy lift and launch Anchor.
Head stay was attached to end of bow sprit but if you plan on keeping Headstay at same location , no bobstay is required.
Here is the good stuff.... Look close in how this strap around Bow Sprit is attached.
Ideas can wonder, go from the Picture.

Looks nice, Grady. And tempting.
Two feet of bowsprit should get your cruising chute forward of the bow pulpit. It would also provide an excellent place for mounting anchor rollers, and you could leave a Bruce-type or Delta anchor on the sprit rather than trying to store it in the anchor locker. If you're careful about smooth edges on anchor-roller slot, you could probably make it so the anchor rode would not chafe - which would keep you that much safer if you anchored out in a blow.
I might put "a bit of bowsprit" on Bossa Nova, just for that improved spinnaker and for the anchor rollers. My goal is to make her as much of a cruiser as one can manage, and use her to get as much experience cruising as I can - with people like Chinook and Sumner to serve as role models, I may find I can accomplish a lot with my trailer-yacht.
Hope your sprit exceeds your expectations!

Thanks Bob, and of course you can copy it. I will let you know how everything works or does not.
It all bonded on and ready. I should be able to test it out tomorrow evening the wind is only suppose to be 10 or so but it should be a good test. probably the strongest wind I will use that sail is 15 or so. hopefully it is strong enough for that wind.

Just to let everyone know I was able to fly the spinnaker last night in almost 15kts of wind. mostly about 15 to 30 deg run. had a couple of collapses and pops and the sprit held up well. It seemed to be easier to fly, still had some trouble in a direct down wind run but that is probably mostly me.

Excellent work! Loogs great. 15-30 degrees off a run i.e. 150-165 is outstanding numbers. Without the sprit or pole, the spinn would collapse at 135 deg. You'll never keep it full dead down wind unless you go wing-on-wing or use a pole, or drop the main, so probably nothing you're doing wrong. BTW, what do yo do for an anchor roller?

Anchor? don't those things slow you down?
At this time I do not spend that many nights out on the water maybe a couple of times a year. Not by choice just do not have time. in the day I use a danforth anchor and put the rope between the side bars on the bow rail. I have not designed it yet but hope to have room to cut a hole in the bowsprit and put a roller and hang a 16lb claw anchor there for when I need it more.
