Older "M" steering

Post by Steve M »

Replaced the rack and pinion on my M
A world of difference. The steering can be turned with great ease.
If yours is an earlier boat (my hull is #36) and your steering is hard, check the routing of the cabe below. I think that mine had a too sharp of a bend that caused the hard steering all along. I just did not have any thing to compare it to.

Our M's cable wasn't bound up..it was flopping around near the linkage..as was the battery cable..I ended up securing it with cable clips so it had a smooth curves..

But our linkage was super tight inside the boat. You could barely move it. I loosened it up and it was fine. Not to mention the linkage was not installed to the motor correctly and it fell off while we were underway.

I agree...you really need to double check the steering (as well as a lot of other things)

I know you all this but once the new steering is installed if it starts vering or doing anything funny scrape the bottom. We couldn't keep our :macx: on one steady course and once it was scapred it was like a brand new boat. Saved use a ton of money.

Another thing I did to the linkage is; I added delrin (plastic) bushings and spacers wherever there was metal to metal contact.
