I JUST FINISHED READING jACK lONDON"S "VOYAGE OF THE SNARK." He ended the around the worlds voyage in the S. Pacific after he and the crew got sores on their bodies that never healed. After spending 4 months in Australia trying to get well he returned to California and finally healed. He found out the problem was extreme over exposure to the sun. It was like getting X-ray radiation on a daily basis he said. White men were not used to so much sun.

What he had is called "photodermatitis"... aka 'sun poisoning'... it's a commom ailment and easily diagnosed.

Many Sailors get Skin Cancer from being exposed to the sun from many years exposure. Would this be the same?
Basicly it is a pore/bubble of the skin that has vains . To remove you have to dig out all the vain routes.
My father did it with a knife and bottle of whisky.(no Ins.)

The first is an immune system response (still not well understood incidentally, although treatable) whereas cancer is a individual cell replication "error", if you will

I've been taking good care of my skin since age 18. I don't like wearing sunblock on my arms- too clammy. I've found a sunshirt that is quick to slip on and with a little tailoring to the collar can cover up the back of the neck even if you have a military short haircut. The shirt is a long sleeve dress style shirt that is made out of an incredibly strong nylon material and it lasts about two years of hard use. It is made out of a gauze material that breathes better than any other sunshirt I have ever purchased. www.sunveil.com Even though it is expensive I am going to buy two more in the next few weeks - another blue one and an olive green one. The manufacturer is in Canada- support your local Canucks !

Those canadians must REALLY love their shirts...

I think I will stick with long sleeve t-shirts...can get five for the price of one of those sunveil shirts.

Best treatment is to be sensible when in the sun and to realize that a good tan from one part of the country (world) will not protect you in another, every year when we head off it is a case of gradual acclimatisation again even though we have just left our southern summer and heading into the northern dry season.
Really can't remember the last time I was burnt (blisters) and I rarely use a screen but do sit in a fishing boat for many hours, of course have seen some horrific cases of burns requiring weeks in hospital and near death.

Sorry, Im a Dr Ross Doctor. If you have some photons you need correlating, Im your guy...but the only body problems I can solve involve three bodies..

reminds me - I should publish that some day...

Stuck in PHL airport, googling to see how far Puff's woods is, since there arent hotel rooms available for the night... :| :|

For god's sake, just call me! Puffswoods is always open for business! We're 1/2 hour up 476 from the airport.

For those of you keeping score, Kelly Hanson East was indeed stranded at the PHL airport, and with no hotels available due to the Icelandic eruption and some local teams in town... so, after a nice long tour of Philadelphia, KHE made it to Puff's Woods in the wee hours... and after the better part of a night's rest he's now safely winging his way home.

BTW, if any of you become similarly stranded around these parts, please don't hesitate to ping us... we'll leave the light on for ya!

Well, I was getting geared up on a cot at PHL when Kevin called me on my cell and he was pretty hard to turn down...so it was a nice end to a week in the travel blender...Thanks again for your and the Admirals' hospitality.

Same invite applies to anyone ever stuck in the ALB NY area !!

Always nice to see you, Steve.

I think the hard part is going to be making the rudder head, not the blade itself. My pintle is more broken than I thought, so I might need some dimensions on that puppy.

(Im all set with the template - dont need it, to answer your question)

I game accross a remedy for over exposure to the sun (Sun Sickness or Haole Rot) which causes sores on the body. Selsum Blue shampoo! It has zinc in it and heals the sores.
