Any ideas on how to attach an outboard support bracket for a long haul. Motor is a Yamaha F60 on a Mac 26M (2008) with Alloy trailer.

Has a spring & attaches to the trailer. Attaching to the trailer is not an option for the Mac. Need some device that hangs on the stern below the engine mount. Perhaps a carpet covered block similar to the trailer bunks

Am interested in what is out there

This has be discussed before, but I can't remember in which area of the site. Truth be told, I couldn't figure out how to do what they were talking about Something about placing a board to help support the motor while trailering.

Yeah Ray, Place a board on the stern below where the motor bolts on. I've made a steel support rod & "V" as a proto type. Now to rig a device to hold the board up. Perhaps attach it to where the motor bolts on to the transom.

Will keep informed with photos of progress.

On the Honda there's a flip down stop. Raise engine, flip down stop, lower until stopped, done.

Look up "Motoring Support Bracket" in Mods by Moe for 26X. Simple solution. Is that what you are looking for? Most motor manufacturers recommend not using the flip down lever for trailering support. CYA? Or not?

This is something I never even considered. We towed all over the place last year with the Honda 8 HP on the back and also the Nissan 5 HP. Do these little outboards need to be supported? They seemed fine, but we are about ready to get a 9.8 HP Tohatsu and I wouldn't want to mess it up as we have some long hauls coming up.

This is what I have come up with so far..



Mainly made out of 20mm gal box tubing. Cold gal sprayed the welds. The carpet covered block is same concept as the trailer bunks, covered with marine carpet which is held on by ss screws.

I use the flip down stop for towing on the island (5 min). For this long haul tow however (2 hrs), I want to be sure as the outboard specs book states not to use the flip down stop for towing.

Issue with the Mac is that there is no trailer frame at the stern to attach a bracket.

I think it is a CYA. Ive trailered my Merc 50 BF for 8 years with just the stop, and on long haul, a line that I run from the rear stanchion down to the skeg. No problems. Those 5-8 HP motors wont need a support imho.

I just use a two foot piece of 2x4 lumber. Raise the motor to full height, place lumber between mounting bracket and engine and then lower the engine until it just barely bites into the wood. Then thick rubber bungie the lower unit to the trailer.

I agree with your idea. We are towing our 2007 Mac26M from North Carolina to Valdez Alaska in June and were concerned with the lack of support for the heavy motor, especially on the factory Mac trailer. We took care of the trailer issue by replacing it with a Venture 8225. Now our Mac only hangs off the end 6 inches rather than 45 inches on the factory trailer. Prior to leaving in June I still may install some sort of engine to trailer support. But at this time I figured the most important thing to do was to set something up that prevented the engined from bouncing, keep it stiff and tied down and there would not be an issue anyway. By placing the 2x4 in between the motor and hull, then strapping it down, she shouldn't move the entire trip. I'll let you know if the theory works out.
