California 2010 vessel property statement

Post by Irafatsar »

WTF anybody else get one? how do I fill it out to not have them tax me. Since I bought my boat new do I need to provide data in section 2 or just my vessel number?

I'm not sure what you mean.
Is it a state thing?

I get a personal property tax notice from LA county because my boat is in mast up storage at MDR on Dec 31, even though I live in a different county 150 miles away.
Kern County has no such assessment.

Sometimes I wonder if trailering it home for the Christmas/New Years season for a week or two will avoid the assessment.
Get some mods done and gain some tax relief.

When I got the same paper I angrily called these greedy SOB's (San Diego County Tax Collector ) and argued with the head greedo for 1 hour. I asked him: If my boat is considered an addition to my property and is taxed at the 1.125 % assessed rate plus any bonds San Diegans were foolish enough to vote in (mosquito abatement bond measure is only one example - What fricken mosquitos? !), could I go ahead and rent the boat out for $400 a month in my driveway and break local zoning laws and municipal codes. He replied as I predicted he would : I don't know but I doubt it, You'll have to check with the Carlsbad building and planning division(Typical pass the buck dolt response- He knows full well that they will tell me no way ).The taxman went on to explain: You only pay a small fee to register the boat(about $55) at DMV but we collect the tax(about $371). He went on : If you register a car at DMV the registration and the tax is collected there . I asked him: Shall I also register my shoes with you and pay an annual tax to you until the assessed value of my shoes reaches zero and there is no more assessed value to tax against ? He tried to soften the blow : Don't worry, as the boat ages the assessed value will drop year after year so the annual taxable amount will drop accordingly. I asked him: What happens if I never fill out the form? He replied: We will assess it for you and if you don't pay we will take your boat. My conclusion: I believe that a car is only taxed( about 8.75 %) once at DMV when it is transferred to each new owner then only the registration fee is paid annually. My boat will be taxed to death every single year until it dies completely ( no more assessable value ? ). What an inviting state for new businesses to start up and new boatowners/homeowners to move to. And they wonder why the've gone broke. I'm mad at Roger for not showing the property tax proposed amount(for some states) in his website. I still would have bought the boat but maybe others would buy used if they couldn't afford the heavy , never ending annual tax.

My Columbia 28 MK II was built in 1969. When I purchased it a few years ago, Orange County valued it at 175% of the purchase price. Their valuation is going "Up" - this is on a 41 year old Fiberglass Boat.

So... no..... the taxes go up....

I got one from California and I haven't lived there since 5/08 :? (They sent it to my daughter's address, an address I used temporarily in 2008 when I lived in Mexico).

However, I think I'm on their list, because when they sent me one in 2007 (bought new 2006M in Dec 2005), I told them to stick it where the sun don't shine :!:

My tax has been:
2007- $280.01
2008- $258.44 (-21.57)
2010- $241.76 (-16.68)
So, it is dropping a bit less each year. I don't have the 2006 purchase tax and other fees here with me. This is paid to the Orange County Tax Assessor, the money is used for limo's and private jets for the elites who work for the county. They travel the world hosting parties with $10,000 liquor bills while our streets decay and our schools fail. Recently they decided to drastically reduce services at the Dana Point launch ramp, taking out parking slots for boaters and letting restaurant employees park in them. They also decided to reduce the number of slips available even though there is a waiting list to get them. I was insulted by my representatives, my public servants when I spoke up at the hearing. I tried to explain that driving the best earners out of the county would not increase tax revenues but they said I was wrong about that. If I could get away without paying these idiots I would.

Used to Live in Redondo Beach. Got a tax bill one year for 50-cents on an 8-foot dingy. I called and went over the cost of stamps and to print and mail the tax notice and threatened to go to the newspaper - they made the assessment go away :x

This is news to me! I have owned my boat since 05', and had other boats prior to that, and have not heard of this tax, and haven't received any documentation or a bill by mail. I pay my California DMV registration, I figured I was good to go! So does this mean I'm in hot water? :?:

Maybe you have moved or some other way you have slipped through the cracks. What I would do is somehow check if there is any generalized website or phone number for these vermin where you can see if they have an outstanding debt against you accruing interest and penalties.I would probably call them anonymously from a pay phone, not give your name, and ask if a website exists to see any debts. If nothing exists then it is on them and then if they discover it later it wouldn't be your fault because they failed to notify you or send you this form. Maybe the DMV accidently didn't send them the information when you registered the boat & trailer. They don't deserve your money anyway so I hope they never figure it out.

i purchased my X used, paid $20K cash in '03.
i had the seller write me up three receipts. one for boat, one for trailer, one for motor.
i showed the receipt for the boat (only) to the DMV and that's the basis that I paid sales tax .
hence, that's the basis that I'm assessed for CA vessel property taxes.

think about it, a Mac doesn't need a motor or trailer to function correctly.
so I'm taxed for the value of the boat.

that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

You pay $371 a year in ADDITION to the DMV tax? And California is still going broke? For a 26' boat?
I guess you can deduct the interest because it can be considered a 2nd home, but most states don't even tax mobile homes if their axles and tongue are still attached.
I remember dealing with the California State Board of Equalization (love that name) years ago over a sales tax issue. Some crazy stuff there. In some counties if you buy a bottle of water and drink it outside it's taxed higher than if consumed inside the business.
What an inviting state for new businesses to start up and new boatowners/homeowners to move to. And they wonder why the've gone broke.
Exactly. Anyone doing their homework would stay away from such a place. Also, they only allow Roger to build one boat per month. If he were smart, he would move out of state where he could build/sell more boats. That's if he were smart. Oh yea, and update his website from the 1990s, but Roger sells all he can make so why do that.
I'm mad at Roger for not showing the property tax proposed amount(for some states) in his website.
I don't blame him for this. NOBODY is going to advertise the (possible) local taxes you will pay. That would be foolish. Do the car companies tell you what you will pay to register your new car. It might change your mind.

Here in Montana we have no sales tax and it cost me about $350 for a one time Permanent registration of my boat and trailer. So buying the Mac wasn't very taxing.
In fact, I have a friend in Kentucky who is forming a Montana LLC through one of these outfits so he can register his RV tax free. Montana has no vehicle inspections so his RV doesn't have to even come here. I see no reason you couldn't do this for a boat.

I wonder, is this tax for boats kept in a slip? I always keep my boat in my backyard on it's trailer. Could this be why I have never received a tax bill?

Doug- Greedo said it was taxed equally in the water in a slip or trailered when I proposed this idea to him. I even asked what if I registered it in Colorado where my Mom lives and he said it wouldn't fly and they would still track me.

Damn! :x How long have they been taxing like this anyway?

So let me see if I got this straight. They tax my proberty where my house sits, then they tax one of my possessions that sits on my property? What are they gonna do next, tax all my possessions?
