Yamaha 50HP outboard water spout question

We have a Yamaha 50HP on our 2000 X and I think the engine age is the same as the boat.

The water spout that pees out from the back of the engine may be blocked. The previous owner told us this was a common problem and that it needs to be cleaned out with a piece of wire.

I know what the water spout looks like when the motor is running. However, now that there is no water coming out of it I don't really know where the water comes from to find the hole to clear it out. From inspecting the engine looking at it from the boat, on the left side on the main body of the engine under the removable hood there is a small hole and also a black plastic pipe stick out and pointing down about 2 inches long.

Can anyone tell me which of these is the water spout hole?

The pee hole is located at #14, athe rear corner on the starboard side.

Hi Gary

I have a Yamaha 50 on my 2001 :macx:
the Pee hole is near the rear, on the left looking at the engine from the front. If you take the hood off it is just behind the fuel filter, a thin black tube attaches to the pipe that goes from inside the cover to the outside. the two larger holes at the rear on the centerline of the engine are for the exhaust.
If you still cannot find it PM me and I will take a photo and email t to you.

Gary,

If you can not find it, don't run the engine. Have a mechanic look at it, and let him show you. The cost of a mechanic looking at it is much cheaper than ruining your motor. You will then have knowledge for the next time. How long since the impeller was replaced :?:

Thank you all. That was very helpful and I have been searching for that manual so thanks for that too.

So if I understand you correctly, it is NOT the black plastic tube that sticks out and points down but it is the other small hole in the metal body of the outboard casing which is pretty much at the point 14 on the diagram above.

Problem sorted. The hole is the small hole in the side of the metal block. This was indeed blocked up and the engine produces a fine pee spout.

Apparently this is a common thing on this outboard (and maybe others) where we use the boat. Out boat is moored in a fresh water bay with a lock to the sea. The lock uses a system that separates the fresh and sea water which produces a lot of turbulence in the lock. Also with a huge rise and fall in tides there is a lot of silt and crap in the water when using the lock which tends to block up the pee hole.

One more problem solved. Thanks.

I have this outboard as well--- exactly same event, every other time I start up,after a week or so, it doesn't pee, no real problem I don't think, I just poke some thin wire down the hole, about 12 inches or as far as it will go and it clears. I reckon my problem is down to tiny critters crawlin' in there when I'm not lookin'.

same outboard here and sounds like the same problem,i just take a thin wire and gentle give it a wiggle,it only happens on the rare occasion, its either down to bugs crawling up there or very small pieces of debris.

Since it was your fitting in the engine block that was the problem, perhaps Yamaha has a larger fitting for your engine as an improvement. Honda increased their water joint fitting size several years ago.

See this posting of mine that describes what I did and I have not had a water blockage in years, whereas before, it was blocked every other trip.
