What's the CE classification for a MacGregor 26M sailboat?

Post by JasonDW »

Does anyone know what a factory rigged 26M is rated at (does MacGregor even classify it, or is this done by some independent committee)?

CE Category defined: Indicates the conditions the boat has been designed for and how many passengers it can take.
-- There are four main categories
--> A Ocean
--> B Off Shore
--> C Inshore
--> D Sheltered Waters
The number indicates the number of passengers the boat was designed for.
e.g. A/6 is an Ocean going vessel that can accommodate 6 passengers.

Perhaps this is well-known, but I cannot find this anywhere. If anyone knows, I'll bet this forum's members do !! :)

Thanks,
JasonDW.

IIRC Somewhere in the MacGregor home site literature it says that the boat was designed and built for inland lakes and protected coastal waters. Unballasted the boat will hold 600 lbs of passengers or 900 lbs ballasted. I am not sure what the official wind force it is built to withstand but there are those who have taken it out in 30-40 knot winds and lived to tell about it. :wink:

Hi

All I can tell you is that the regulations were adjusted recently.

European Class goes now from 1 to 5

1- Ocean
...
5 - Protected waters
Depending on structural conditions and limits of the boat

But it also depends on safety equipment on board.

A Macgregor 26X/M for example can be:

Class 5 (Protected or inland waters) if equipped only with basic safety gear. (Max. crew 8 )
Class 4 (class 5 + Coastal waters up to 25M from harbors) equipped with basic plus: flares, VHF/DSC, raft, ... (Max. crew 6 )

Class 5 = old class D
Class 4 = Old class C2

Another example:
I have a friend who owns a Dehler 34 Ocean Going (But is is classified only as 3 for the moment due to budget limits for electronics)

I've looked in my :macm: owner manual and can't find any mention of a CE classification. :cry: However, it sounds like something Mr. MacGregor may wnat to include in his subsequent owner manuals. :wink:

From MacGregor's export website: Sharp Marine Industries

What CE category is the MacGregor 26?
  • The MacGregor 26 Power Sailer can be CE marked for Category C.

750 kg? That's pretty good ...

Did you have a local surveyor do the CE certification? (Just curious.)

Also curious about the "extras" José mentions in his post ....

I can see a possibility that I might want to ship my 26X overseas someday, but probably not to the EC ... all the same, knowing it's "surveyable" to Category C could be a help. Thanks!

If I read this right......

Motor = 51 Hp

8 people max

1958 pounds load (people - baggage - motor)

for Inshore and Sheltered water operations...

***********************

does that mean that you aren't "supposed" to go on to saltwater? have a larger enginer??

--just curious how the rating works....

He's got a different opinion
He has indeed! An inspiring and (for the safety-margin-conscious) comforting opinion, IMHO.

Also a clear exposition of the classic saying - "It's not the sailboat, it's the sailor." I freely acknowledge that his are bigger than mine, and not "brass" but solid marine bronze. He's done lots more with Murrelet than I plan to do with Bossa Nova.

Class 4 - "coastal waters up to 25 miles from harbors" - were Mike & Jeff Inmon farther than 25 nm off Costa Mesa when they shot that video? Prolly not ... you can get plenty of weather that close to shore. Class 4 waters would include Puget Sound, the Chesapeake Bay, the whole ICW, the Channel Islands, the Florida Keys, likely the Bahamas when you get right down to it. For a wee little boat like ours, that's a lot of "sea room". I could get along with having to trailer her down to Baja. (And you can go 65 mph to the Florida Keys via 1-95.)

If the day comes that Bossa Nova isn't enough "sea boat" for me, she will have helped me learn the skills to handle a larger, more sea-kindly boat in bigger, more challenging condition. The Mac 26x is plenty of boat for my near-future purposes and goals, even if I don't think she's enough boat to challenge the Roaring Forties.

Had to fly the inspector in from Germany.

Registration in various EU countries can include additional requirements, especially regarding equipment. The CE classification just says what the basic capabilities of the boat should have, but says nothing about how it's outfit, e.g. with liferings, anchors, etc. Local requirements address such things in most cases.
