Catalina- Sept.17-19th, 2004 - RECAP

Post by BK »

Dave Clark, Steve Johnson and myself (BK) are planning a Macgregor trip to 2 Harbors and Avalon, Catalina on Sept 17-19th. Join us. It will be a loose tied trip and we will go to 2 Harbors first for the beer fest which is on the 18th. Best to get to 2 Harbors before Saturday to get a mooring as it is first come first served. I am leaving for 2 Harbors on the 16th to get a spot so I can help you guys with mooring with my inflatable. Call on channel 71 and I will meet you at your mooring spot. My boat is "Seabird".
That weekend in Avalon, the 18th and 19th will be their annual art and craft show. We are planning to go to Avalon on Sunday as it should be easier to get a spot. Thats it, Please add anything I missed.

did a google search...

is this info still good?

What are the parking and launch fees?

Launch Ramp parking fees are $8.00 per day, payable at the gate when you enter.

What are the address to the Launch Ramps?

We have two 24-hour Launch Ramps. Davies Launch Ramp is at Second Street and Marina Drive, the address is 6201 Marina Drive. The Southshore Launch Ramp is south of the Queen Mary at 590 Queensway Drive. Call (562) 570-8636 for information.

When do the Launch Ramps open for business?

The Davies Launch Ramp and the Southshore Launch Ramp are open 24 hours daily. All other Ramps are opened 8 a.m. to dusk.

Im thinking about joining you on this trip. Ill probably just sail up to Long Beach from Oceanside and meet you there. Ill keep monitoring this post and make the decision when the time gets closer. It sounds like another great trip is on it's way.

Avalon trip

Post by Roy B. Highland »

Hey, pencil me in. I'm in the California central coast and will be driving down the day before launch. Any RV parks in the area? Could I just stay overnight at the launch area?
I've never been to Catalina and look forward to the sail and visit.
Have a 1997 26x that doesn't get enough use.
Hopefully I can talk the wife in joining. I've got a lot of time to start giving "offerings" before Sept.

Parking and launch

Post by BK »

Steve and Roy, park and launch at the Davies ramp($8 a day) at Second Street Bridge and get a slip for a day from Alamitos Harbor for $16 a nite. You have to go under this bridge before you can rig so you might as well get a slip, rig the boat, get groceries from across the street and spend the night for a early morning high speed smooth crossing. They have nice showers there. There are many restaurants across the street and W/M and Boaters World is there too. That is why there is a 10 year waiting list to get into this harbor.
Dave Clark is on pier 28, we both have a bathroom key and can let you guys use it as the harbor has a $50 key deposit.
Call Erick at Alamitos Marina for a slip in advance at 562-570-3215. The harbor has a requirment that you have to submit your boat registration to get a slip so send it in advance to Erick so he will have it on file.
They accept reservations 30 days in advance. I talked with Erick today(7-30-04) and he said to send a copy of your boat registration to: Alamitos Marina Harbor Master, ATTN: Erick, 205 Marina Dr. Long Beach, Ca. 90803.
The Catalina Harbor office number if you have any questions is 310-510-0535. Their VHf call number is channel 12 but they always meet you at the harbor entrance to give you a mooring. Get a mooring past the Tuna Club towards the gas dock. I will be arriving about Wednesday that week so I will help you guys with the buoys in my inflatable. I will monitor the channel we decide on in the morning to know your are arriving that day. To pick up the mooring line, first pick up the pole which is attached to the anchor line. After tieing up the front then run the this same line to your rear cleat.
Two Harbors office is 310-510-4253, they are on channel 9 but again they always sit at the harbor entrance to meet you. Don't let them put you on the line. Get a mooring on the right side of the pier which is only $2 more.
Directions to parking at Davies Ramp: Second Street hits PCH(1), turn towards the harbor and turn right at the first light which is at the start of the bridge. Go down a block and it looks like you are turning into Albertsons but turn left towards the water and you will see the parking. Remember to get the receit from the box and leave it on the dash. You can leave car and trailer there I believe for up to 2 weeks.

Roy..

Sounds like BK has a good plan for the trip. I will follow his advice and go the day before and spend the night there for an early start. I live in Oxnard. If you want to come this far and spend the night we can drive down there after rush hour gets over. Send me a PM if you need any info.

I agree with what Bob said.

Roy: I think there are a couple RV type parks further south on PCH, but I think they are full in the summer and a bit out of the way (probably not that cheap either). I think your best choice is to leave it in the launch area and take the guest slip. If for some reason it is a problem, I have an extra parking pass for the marina...as soon as I remember where it is...I'm sure you can park there (but you'd still have to leave the trailer at the ramp.

Like Bob said, everything you want is nearby (starbucks is in albertsons), I have two restroom keys. They all have showers (Bob said nice showers, so apparently he found one I haven't seen! - but descent none the less).

Tim Z: I'll try to remember to dig out the bimini for you.

Rats, sure wish I could go with you all. I'll be in DC for that week and when I get back I'm sure there will be the Honey-Do list from...well, you get the picture.

I count 6 Mac's going??? Definitely need some fleet maneuvering drills with pictures for that one. That would make a great promo picture for MacGregor.

Folks, enjoy!!! I'm totally jealous.

I think Bob is in the San Juans until sometime around Sept 1.

I'm planning on sailing at least most of it. On the Ensenada trip Francis had a 9.9 hp and had no problems. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Hi guys, I am in Victoria right now. We decided to go to Sidney and take the 45 minute bus ride down. This is much easier than going around the long way to Victoria and I think a good way to take next years flotilla as it is a straight shot across from Roche Harbor. They have a customs dock here and Sidney is a nice clean place. BTW, Victoria slips is now $27 a night, up from $15 last year. I ran into Sherry and John from last years flottilla here in Port Sidney.
Two Harbors on Friday and Saturday for the beer festable sounds good for me and then Sunday to Avalon for the art show. What do you guys think?

BK,

I was in Sidney in may and it is a nice place. Have more bookstores per capita than anywhere. It is just across from Roche so its a natural. Dont forget to have high tea at the Empress. I dont want to be the only one to pay 40 bucks for that experience!

Two harbor and then Avalon sounds OK to me. I will have to depart sunday...I am enrolled in an EMT class on monday and wed nights...cant miss any!

BK,

Go around to the west side of Saanich Penisula down Saanich Inlet to Brentwood Bay. You can stay at the dock and see Butchart Gardens via boat, way cool. It's a must see stop when in Victoria.
