In the seven weeks since my last post, I've only made time to drain the brake fluid as a prelude to removing the calipers. Re Brian's remark, my rotors have rust on them, including the pad swept surfaces.

I should add that I'm in fresh water only (so far), launch/retrieve one cycle per year, with mostly indoor storage for trailer and boat in the off-season. Still, I found it was remarkable that there was no rust yet, which is why I remarked on it! 
Normally the rust on the swept surface of the rotors will dissappear after the first few miles/ brake applications, if everything is working properly, and the rust is not too severe.
